Is it worthwhile asking?

I've worked the registers for the last 9 years and i would love to try a different department to get more experience within the store, i've asked to change departments but the manager has always said no.

We now have a new store manager and the csm has just hired 6 new employees for the service area, so do you think i should ask again? I have a feeling the answer will be no because everyone in service can't stand it and alot of new employees have quit cause they can't take the pressure.

I just want to do something different, i'm getting very bored.

I think it's worth asking, other wise you wouldn't know, might as well give it a try.

Explain you have enjoyed working registers, you are experienced in that role but would love the chance to stretch yourself and learn new skills and improve yourself.

Definitely ask. Especially with a new manager...tell them exactly what you said in your first sentence:

The fact that they hired new people who might quit should not be an excuse to keep you stuck in the same place forever. They should look at it as an opportunity to give people who've been there a long time some other training and maybe chances for advancement or at least variety!

I know how you feel...I spent nearly all of my years (6 of em!) in Store1 as head cashier; the last 3 of them I was not even officially a HC, just a de facto one. I spoke to my manager at my last review there about getting away from cashwrap and spending more time on the floor (and she's the one who brought it up first - I found out later it was at the suggestion of my then-bf, who was a department manager <shh!>). Suffice to say, it never happened and I don't think she ever really intended for it to. After my relationship with my bf became known I transferred to another store, as head cashier but with more responsibility than Store1 gave its HCs, and later moved out to Fiction Lead, then New Releases, spent time in Receiving, was sent to a Lead Development program the district manager started, and for the last year the distribution center. The biggest difference was the manager. Store1's didn't give a about the advancement of employees (unless you were one of her little pets which I wasn't) and Store2 actually wanted to see us do something besides stand at a register or shelve the same books for years on end.
Do you think I have a tad bit of lingering resentment? My consolation is that Store1's manager was <ahem> resigned several months ago.
