  • Minimal Wage

Just wondering what the minimal wage is in America.

    Here in the UK it's:

    £5.35 - 22 year old +
    £4.40 - 18 - 21 yrs
    £3.30 - under 18 yrs

Federal? Is $5.85 an hour. Next year it will be $6.55, then it moves to $7 something

Some states have higher minimum wage requirements, but by and large, most go with the Federal requirement.

Isn't that for full timers though?

The store I used to work at (albeit a few years ago) would snap people up on PT contracts then happily and consistently hand them 40 hour weeks....

It's $7+ here in California, going up to $8 in January. But some cities and counties have "living wage" statutes, which mean that in those areas the minimum wage is even higher.

            7.80 in Oregon.

I make under a dollar more then that, even though I been there four years. Plaid doesn't increase your wage if you're already over min wage.

EDIT: On a side note, Oregon has the second highest minimal wage standard. The first being Washington, at I belive 8 dollars.

Florida's minimum wage is $6.67/hr ($3.65/hr for tipped employees) for 2007. However, thanks to a state constitutional amendment tying the minimum wage to the rate of inflation, every year the minimum wage is recalculated.

Nope. I'm part time and get £5.35. Most of the staff at my place are part time and they get the same as full timers.

In fact it is a legal requirement: http://www.dti.gov.uk/employment/emp...page19479.html

Converted at today's rate, that's $10.79 / hour. Which is what *I* make currently.

                  Typical.

Yes, and their cost of living is higher than ours (at least in most places), so the money gets sucked down twice as fast.

I have heard a figure of 15% higher in the UK.

But our taxes are probably higher. VAT (sales tax) is 17.5%. But then we have largely free medical care.

Gas (petrol) is significantly more expensive - it works out around $8.50 a gallon at current prices and exchange rates.

Housing can be really expensive as well in the UK- at least if you want to live where the jobs are. Our rent is cheap, for where we are, cause we're on the slightly dodgy side of town. Close to City Centre, smallish place, £500 a month. And that's cheap for where we are- other places the same size could cost you from £750-£1000 a month. And we're not a big or main city at all.

I'm on £5.35 an hour, currently, it's meant to be going up to £5.65 as of two months ago, but payroll is really bad at keeping track.

The cinema I work at sets the wages at minimum and they don't change unless the government puts them up (which they have been doing annually).

we get payrises when we pass our tests. Luckily they backdate them, so when they finally give me my 30p an hour payrise they'll have to give me several months in one go,
