  • Must... scan... at lightspeed! O_o

At *supermarket*, everyone has been told to scan really really fast. 17 items per hour, in fact. Cuz mine is 15, I've been told I might have to attend "scan school", ie watch a training video. -___- Most of the customers hate us scanning like Speedy Gonzales; but corporate still insists on it! Argh... X_x

Damn, they want you to scan over one item every four minutes?! Will the agony never end?!

      Is that a typo?

Yes; per minute I think. Yeah, it's called IPM. I'm just so stressed about this; so no need for sarkiness. -_________-

Gotta love management forcing such stupid things as IPM because they need to wring more transactions through the registers.

Methinks they may rethink that if the cashiers start tossing customers' groceries every which way in trying to boost their IPM, breaking jars and splattering customers.

At Wal-Mart they call it "IPH". Items Per Hour. Believe it or not you can be written up for going below a certain speed. & if you stay slow for too long then you get fired.

At HEB they require you to be at 30 IPM. For weeks while I was a cashier I never broke 25 then I got to 40.

I complained to my local supermarket once that the cashiers scanned too fast. There is absolutely no point in her slinging all the stuff down the belt at me at warp speed, because I can only pack so fast (baggers are not common in the UK). The CSM agreed with me that it wasn't very practical, and that they had had complaints from other people as well but said it was a directive from Corporate. So I wrote to Corporate.

I got a nice letter back, and a few weeks later the ultra-fast scanning seemed to have stopped. I think a lot of customers must have complained.

Its does seem completely pointless. Even a "professional" bagger isn't so efficient as to be able to pack bags at the speed of 30 items a minute. At least not without damaging items.

When the cashier scans too fast, I'm the one who feels like the a$%hole for taking too long. The next customer is line is waiting for me to finish packing my stuff, and half her groceries are already down the belt.

When I go to the grocery store, I want to be in and out in under 5 minutes. That 5 minutes includes checking out.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. If you're at 15 IPM, it shouldn't take much to bump to 17 IPM. Maybe start memorizing where some of the bar codes are and what not.

The more you worry about it, the more you're going to fret. Just relax, take a deep breath and scan those items. You'll be fine!!!

when i worked for winn dickme they wanted something like 32 IPM. but you didnt get in trouble if you couldnt meet it.

I think i averaged 40 for a while, and everyone was happy. Then i stopped signing off my register and dropped to like 8.

It's the same at Meijer. When I was cashiering I got called into the office twice because I wasn't scanning fast enough. I honestly felt I was going as fast as I could without totally screwing up but it wasn't good enough.

That's one of the many reasons I transferred from the front end. But now many of us floor associates get called up to run a lane nearly every shift because they refuse to schedule enough cashiers.

                        It stinks!

IMHO the cashier should scan the fastest they can without damaging any items. IF it as a bunch of canned goods scan those faster than bread or eggs, etc.

That's one of the most absurd things I've ever read on this site and I've read some doozies here.

Sounds like corporate need to come down to the front lines for a few days and have customers yelling at them for tossing their groceries around and I'm sure they'll rethink their policies.

I feel sorry for you guys in retail having to put up with stupid crap like that all the time.
