  • Errrgh (just complaining, feel free to skip)

I am currently in the ninth hour of a twelve hour shift. And I just wanna go to my room and get some sleep.

It started out like any other Friday. I woke at 7am, got ready, left for my 8am Writing for the Web class, spent 3 hours there, then came home around noon. On my way through the lobby, my boss waved me over. Turns out one of the full-time staff people called in sick, and he wants me to start early. At 4pm. *double-take* Huh? Isn't that when I started already? Quick perusal of the schedule shows that a revision done on the 18th has me working from 8pm to 4am, instead of 4pm-midnight. Completely my fault as I'd noticed a new version of the schedule yesterday (Thursday, whatever. Completely different snafu beyond the scope of this whining). Well, wasn't planning on starting at 8pm, so no biggy. Wait, still going until 4am? 12 hour shift? Ooookaaayyy, well. Doable. Especially for the added incentive of *overtime*! *triplecheck schedule* Umm, bossman? Need me to come in early tomorrow too? 'Cause you're kind of in the same boat. So, I volunteered myself into a second 12 hour shift, as I was originally 4pm-midnight, changed on the 18th to 8pm-4am, and now going 4pm-4am. After assuring him that I had no plans this weekend that would be interrupted, he agreed, giving me more of the coveted overtime! These were my only two shifts this weekend, so I figured I'd be able to readjust my sleeping, as I had Monday free. Then while talking to bossman, I got a call. The guy who's going to help me put my computer together is free on Monday to give me some finalizing advice before I order (probably on Thursday, I'll post the list in my Tech Help thread for critiquing after the Monday meeting ), so now I've got to make sure I'm functional on Monday. *sigh* I'm sure I'll manage, but geez, these 12 hour shifts are stupid.

Anatomy of a 12 hour shift: Start at 4pm. Work until 9, take 1hr "lunch" break. Come back at 10, co-worker leaves. Alone until midnight. Security guard arrives. Sit and do little except print guest sign-in forms and sign out keys until 4 am. Go collapse in bed and attempt to sleep despite headache (just assuming on this last point, but seems likely).

Tomorrow should be even more fun as the new hires are doing shadowing. Joy. I just hope they've the brains they were issued. On the bright side, we're rotating the 8pm-4am shift, so I'm not likely to have to put up with it for a while.
    Ish.

Well, I think I'm about complained out, and everything seems quiet right now, and the guy taking care of the sign-in table is playing on his guitar, nice and mellow. So cookies and soothing music for those who read this

    Mmm... mellow, soothing music... nice.

    12-hour shifts can be murder.

I used to do craft shows, and by the end of the day, you're ready to just curl up and tell the world to come back tomorrow.

Five hours left in stupid shift of doom pt.2. Will to live is fading. Stupidity is rampant. Raging buttmonkey invasion was thwarted. Fire panel decided to go off for no discernable reason. Or at least as far as I know. Not like anyone tells me anything. I'm just the guy everyone asks what's going on. Temperature fluctuates wildly, being freezing one moment, and boiling the next. My trusty sweaterjacket helps not. There is a lull in the influx of peons, though another wave is sure to arrive soon. Someone is wearing something perfumed, clouding my head with pain and dulling my senses. Resolution passed to never freaking do this again, no matter the overtime promised. The barricades are currently in good repair, though the stalwart defenders will be slowly departing over the coming hours. The harsh lights inside make me long for the soothing darkness waiting on the other side of the windows. Various curses aimed at security and parking services ("passthebuck inc.") bounce around my skull, unable to find purchase among the haze. Time has become a fluid concept, with seconds stretching to eternity while minutes fly past.

      More if I can.

One hour left, and I feel like I'm about to slip into a coma. The worst part is I haven't even done anything. Heck, the most exertion of my shift was probably the wandering across the street for supper. Then again, that could be a major part of the issue... I've tried doing some walking around, but that was no help. I just wanna go upstairs and crawl into bed and pray that it's not too noisy this morning. Oh well. At least I probably won't have to do this next month. *sigh*
