  • Applying at Target...

Alright, I've gotta get a job and no one seems to be looking for a graphic designer currently (and those who are, want experience - well hello! how about you HIRE ME and then I'll get the EXPERIENCE???? ) So I'm heading up to Target tomorrow to fill out an app for seasonal employment.

    Any suggestions/warnings??

Oh, and I need to tell them that I absolutely cannot work at all about/around/on Thanksgiving/Black Friday/following weekend.

If you're not available weekends or holidays, I'd say there's no chance in hell.

Oh, and I need to tell them that I absolutely cannot work at all about/around/on Thanksgiving/Black Friday/following weekend.
Then you will not be getting the job.

At my store, the seasonal hires are told they will be working Black Friday, the weekend of Black Friday, and probably the Saturday before Christmas. If they cannot make themselves available to work those days, they are no longer considered.

        Sorry, that's retail for you.

Seasonal help means you WILL be working the important seasonal days.

As has been said, that involves Christmas and Thanksgiving weekends, including Black Friday.

If you were going for PART time or FULL time help, but not seasonal, you MIGHT stand a chance. Seasonal? The Devil Rays have a better chance of winning the Super Bowl on a Thursday in Japan! (For those of you that don't follow sports, ask someone who does to explain that to you!)

Once again, I am so glad I work in the food industry and not retail. Although I will not need Black Friday off this year as the Arizona State-Arizona football game is a week later this year, it was nice to always be able to get it off. Since I do NOT miss that game....EVER. This year will be my 20th in a row watching it. Seen it every year since I started at ASU 19 years ago. GO DEVILS!

Oh, sorry, where was I? Oh yeah.....seasonal help is not going to get those dates off. Might as well be the new hire in an Irish pub trying to get St. Patrick's Day off. Or the fresh face at the IRS trying to get time off in April. Or work in a costume shop and try to get time off near the end of October.

Okay, I think the point's been made. Time to go beat dead horses elsewhere!

EDITED TO ADD: If you need those dates off, restaurant work might be better for you. Just a thought. As I've said before, Thanksgiving weekend is not necessarily that big a deal in the restaurant industry. Unless you work at Denny's. But then, why would you WANT to?

For the people going out there, and those from other countries that might not know the intricacies of American Football and Baseball traditions, this means that it is impossible for several reasons:

            1) The Devil Rays are an MLB team, while the Super Bowl is a NFL event.
            2) The Super Bowl is always held on a Sunday.
            3) None of the stadiums that the game would be held at are in Japan.
            4) The Devil Rays suck.

              Didn't know that. Thanks.

              I knew those two.

              4) The Devil Rays suck.
Kind of guessed that was what Jester was suggesting.

Anyway, best of luck Custard Chick in your hunt for employment.

Yeeaaah...I kinda figured that. I mean, I am completely available whenever needed EXCEPT those days. Day/afternoon/evening/night, weekday/weekend. Even though I'd rather not work evening/nights/weekends, I will if needed. That kinda thing.

Eh, just figured I'd check in and find out my chances.

Yeah, you're better off. I used to work there. If things are still the same as they were when I was there you'll get next to no training, if you get trained at all. They'll put you in the hardest area your first night and then complain that it looks horrble/you're moving too slow/ need to build and fill encaps/ bend over backwards/ perform the triple lindy. All without explaining ANYTHING.

If you're lucky it'll only be four of those.

Retail places are extremely fussy about availability. Basically, you have to be available anytime, anyplace, anywhere, or you are SOL.

                    I'm finding that out now.

Raieth, you must be new here and/or to retail. Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving when retail stores have all those sales.

It is called Black Friday by merchants because it is often considered the day of the year that their books finally get "into the black" as it were.

It is called Black Friday by retail workers for an entirely different and negative reason. If you have worked retail, you would understand. If you haven't, you should be grateful, as I always am.

I fear that day, this year will be my first black friday in retail, and I'm going to get my ass handed to me, especially that weekend since our FT cart guys are both on night shifts, one of them will probably have a weekend day off. oh the massive, ungodly amounts of help I will need

as for the original post, I hear Target is worse than Wal Mart, but any retail store will depend heavily on the store level management, assuming Target's corporate isn't as power trippy as wal mart's(seriously WM, let your managers *GASP* MANAGE their stores, they know what to do better than you) a great manager will make the job not too bad, and you WILL find one somewhere in the store, mine happens to be my assistant, and my store manager kicks ass too
