  • Kmart going to pot

I don't know if any of you have been in a Kmart lately or work in one (like I do), but damn! I don't think they're going to last another 10-15 years. They're all alike, by the way, and I think nearly all Kmarts have the same problems mine does. And I don't get how these corporate idiots can just sit there in their big padded chairs and NOT realize that their stores suck! Kmart is a name synonymous with "sucky retail store." Kmart is like the red-headed stepchild (no offense to redheads ) of the retail giants. Okay, on to my rant:

Sometimes I just hate going into work, because the customers are usually quite grouchy from having to wait in line for eons with only two cash registers open (or only ONE if one of the cashiers has to go on break). Or from waiting for 15 minutes to get into the fitting rooms - they started actually locking the fitting rooms (WITHOUT an attendant) due to theft and they attached a doorbell (yes, an actual doorbell) that rings at the service desk when a customer pushes it and the service desk is supposed to page for a softlines associate to go unlock the fitting rooms.

And it can be stressful.. even cashiering, it feels like you're doing the work of 2-3 cashiers because you're under pressure to ring people up quickly and get them out of there because they've been waiting in line so long and you're the only register open, god forbid you have to call for a price check or something else goes wrong with a transaction. Sometimes departments can't call you back immediately after you page them because they're the only one on the floor and they're with another customer or whatever. And then all the customers in line are glaring at YOU because the line isn't moving.

The main reason for all of this is because they slash payroll SO horribly to save money. It's not the individual stores' fault (so I get annoyed when I hear customers bitching, "WHY DON'T THESE MANAGERS JUST HIRE MORE PEOPLE?!?") because if they go over on payroll they will receive a nice little conference call from our district manager to scream at them, who I think is probably a dickhead from personal experience and things I've heard about him through the grapevine.

Not only do they slash payroll to save money, but in the middle of high summer, they CUT OFF the air conditioning on the floor of the store (for some strange reason, the back office/cash office still had air conditioning). We'd have customers bitch constantly about it. I felt for them, but I also wanted to say to them, "Yeah, and try WORKING in it!" I'd have beads of sweat rolling down my face when working register - which was quite embarrassing seeing as I was working with customers. I felt so gross and sweaty. I'd come home SOAKED in sweat from working checkouts. And to make it worse, we can't have any sort of drinks at checkouts or on the sales floor, so we have to stand there dehydrated.

I think customers need to get more pro-active - if you have time to bitch about a corporation, you NEED to call and write the big boys up top and tell them the situation in the stores - how you're a longtime customer, how terrible the checkout lines are, how you can't get into the fitting rooms, how there's no help on the floor, etc. Because they're not going to listen to associates.

And for some reason, customers like to come up and complain to me about things, I don't know why - maybe I look easy to talk to (or bitch at). A lady came up to me the other day when I was working checkouts. She asked me if I was a manager (I'm only 20, so.. not saying managers are old, but most managers are at LEAST 25-30 as it takes experience to get into management..) I giggled a little and told her no, I wasn't, but I could get her one if she wanted it. She said no, she didn't have time to talk to one but wanted me to relay a message to management. She said she had been waiting at the fitting rooms for 20 minutes (probably NOT 20 minutes..probably more like 3-5 minutes.. and why on Earth would someone wait there 20 minutes without trying to flag an associate down for help or going to the Service Desk..?). She also bitched because she couldn't even try on a coat because *gasp* we have no mirrors out on the floor (I later found out that this is for legal reasons, as they're afraid of young children pulling the mirrors down on themselves - a child was actually killed not too long ago from a folding mirror falling on them in a Sears fitting room).

I almost told her to call corporate.. but I thought the better of it.. because if she does, then my store manager will get in trouble. And no, I didn't relay the message to management. I'm not going to bug them with it, because they already KNOW and there's nothing they can do about it. I'm sure they'd find themselves without jobs if they spoke up to the bigwigs about it. Corporations want "YES" men, not revolutionaries. They want sheep to work for them.

Sorry this was so long, just had to rant! I hope to find another job after Xmas. I don't know why I've stayed with Kmart so long. I'm just a college student, but this still bugs me since I have a strong work ethic. It's like watching a sinking ship or something.

A lot of the stuff you described seems to be retail in general--the long checkout lines, the lack of help, the lack of climate control--those are things you'd probably find at most every big box store and probably aren't unique to K-Mart.

That said, the two K-Marts nearest to me that I've gone to are absolute pits. Unorganized, messy, dirty, and dreary, and the parking lots are Pothole City where El Caminos and Dodge Caravans battle for supremacy. I don't seem to notice any effort by K-Mart to remodel and fix up their stores, and I don't really hear about them opening up new ones.

Theres talk about our local Kmart being shut down once their lease is up in a year or two and having a Walmart open in its place. You can imagine all the commotion this is causing, hell theres even a coallition against it http://www.stopwalmartventura.com/ Not that I really care since the shopping center that they are talking about it is a piece of crap currently. But is it a win win or a trading one pile of crap for another situation. Oh well thats life for ya.

We actually like our nearest Kmart, even though they're far from the greatest store in the area.

True, Kmart has a subpar selection compared to Wal-Mart and Target, but usually we can find most of what we're looking for there. But with Wal-Mart packed to the gills and the nearest Target about 90 minutes away from us (we're one of only two US states without a Target), Kmart is refreshingly uncrowded even during the busiest times. Waiting in line takes about as long as Wal-Mart at worst.

Alot of what you described reminded me of my K-mart days.

I worked in the sound and vision area, and corporate kept saying that they "could not repair the air conditioning" in our area 'because it was hard to get too" so on hot days, it was 10x more hot in our area due to the machines!

On busy days, my old manager was great, he would get more people on, and would delegate roles so that customers got served. However, on weekdays when my manager wasn't there, I was made to do paint (which I knew NOTHING about) fishing, sporting goods, and gardening as WELL as sound and vision...yes..one person had to help customers in 5 areas, 4 of which I knew nothing about.

But it does sound like most big chain stores I've been too. Hardly anyone working, the store is a mess, and unorganized, frustrated workers. high theft.

One can only hope and PREY that one day the big boys will see how stupid they are, and instead of cutting costs where they shouldn't, they decide to put money back INTO the store...but it'll be a business going bankrupt that will do that..nothing else...and even that might not wake them up

Rammstein girl, I hear the same thing every day from my little brother.

It must be a universal K-Mart thing. There are never any more than 2 registers open per shift, lines going out into the aisles, no one at the service desk....maybe 1 or 2 employees roaming about the store.....

He hates it, absolutely hates it.

There's one in my area, and it does suck. They just don't seem to have anything anymore, and they seem to be getting rid of all kinds of items they once carried.

I don't know how they stay in business.

Customers are being proactive. They're shopping at different stores. If the big boys can't read a spreadsheet, then they're not going to realize what the customers are telling them.

No, but overall, KMart is the worst. Though WalMart is beginning to close the gap.

I rarely go to K-mart as Wally's is my absolute favorite store to shop at. That being said I have noticed when I do drive by our local K-mart that there is very few cars in the parking lot. The store in a "mini-mall" and is the anchor store, there are hundreds of parking spots but maybe 75 are taken in front of the store at any given time. It used to be packed to the gills, but no more. Now if one were to go to Wally's...hundreds of cars there!! Even at least fifty to seventy five at 1 a.m. I mainly shop after midnight and it is still a bit crazy. I refuse to think about shopping on a weekend. Practically every parking spot there is taken. I did stop at K-mart a couple of weeks ago because we were looking for an end table, there were nice things there but I could not help but compare the prices to Wally's.

My roomie and I have always said that the nicest thing about KMart is you can always get front row parking.

That being said.... I used to work for KMart's sister company. I worked there for nearly 4 years.

Alywin Lewis and Eddie Lampert saved KMart briefly, but destroyed Sears. When I worked at Sears I learned that our daily goals were set, but then lowered when it was realized we weren't going to make them.

Culture meetings did nothing for us as the most unethical people in the company where the ones effin' with my pay so they could save the company money. Stabalize my income my ass. I'm so glad to be out. And no, I don't think Sears nor KMart will be around very long. Didn't Sears just take a 40% profit loss a quarter or two ago? I think that's what happened.

Years ago I worked at KMart. For two weeks. In Layaway.

I barely remember a time when KMart was decent, but it's gotten so much worse lately. I HATE having to go to the one nearby, but it's a bit closer than the nearest Target and WalMart.

I LOVE WalMart the best, but like Gurndigarn said, it's getting pretty bad, too. Rather like KMart Junior.

If only I could find a decent Goodwill.

Actually, the Kmart I work at does fairly good business. It's an old store, in the middle of town right at a busy intersection. Of course, it's never as crowded as Walmart or Meijer which are just right down the road. It probably depends on the location of the store as to the amount of business it receives. My Mom likes to shop at Kmart because they're typically not as crowded as Walmart.

Honestly, I wouldn't shop there if I didn't work there. I'm willing to tough it out until after the holidays (because I need time off after Xmas to visit family in Florida and I can't get a new job then ask for time off) but it's just.. for the pay and measly hours (I was scheduled for 12 hours this week - yes - only 12 hours!) it's not worth the stress and coming home with migraines. I was making more money in high school working at the grocery store after school, where I was guaranteed 30-35 hours a week.

Oh, Fashion Lad, good for you that you jumped ship. I bet it sucks even worse to work at Sears - I hear that you can be fired if you don't meet the PA (Sears warranty) and credit card application requirements. We're supposed to push our so-called Smart Plans and Sears charge apps on customers at Kmart, but the commission on them is so measly, it's usually too busy to spend 5 minutes at the checkout processing a credit app, and nobody wants a Sears card because it's like 26% interest. It's probably a little easier to get customers to open up Sears credit accounts at Sears, since they sell big-ticket items and they want to save that 10% off the item. But I think it's a little silly to push them at Kmart when the person is just buying toilet paper and shampoo.

On my yearly review, I got points docked for not processing enough credit apps. My manager actually said to me (I hope it wasn't her, and that she was just forced by corporate to say this) that if we cashiers got more Sears Card apps that we'd have enough payroll to schedule people so we wouldn't be so shorthanded. Isn't that a load of shit there?

At least you don't have to watch those stupid "Culture" videos. We've been watching one lately where it has Alywin Lewis talking about respect and a bunch of feel-good mumbo jumbo. "Don't let the customer feel our internal problems." Yeah, well, that's impossible dude. Do these corporate honchos EVER actually set foot inside their Kmart and Sears stores and see how bad things are? I don't think they care. They probably know the company is falling under and just want to make their money while it's still afloat.

Locally, Kmart has always been somewhat of a joke. That wasn't helped with their famous "blue light specials." But seriously, I don't think people know what to make of Kmart--are they equal to Walmart or Target, a step below, or what? We got a new Kmart store, after the old one burned in 1999, caused by (oddly enough) problems with the air conditioning). The entire store literally burned to the ground--no sprinklers inside at all Turns out there was a loophole in the borough's building code, that stated the store didn't have to have them, since it was built before the code was enacted. However, the borough had been after the building owners for *years* to not only install them, but fix the damn parking lot as well. There are craters large enough to swallow buses!

Selling PAs are easy. Pushing the credit cards are a little hard, but I was always able to meet my metrics in both categories. They really can't fire you for not making metrics, but they can cut your hours. They can also fire you for not offering everything, as it's part of your job to offer everything. I really don't miss this videos... Alywin Lewis was so painful to listen to. I'm happy that Mike O'Dell is no longer part of the company... he was threatening. Of course, I think someone must've talked to him about what he said because towards the end he was a lot easier to listen to. Overall, I'm thrilled to be out of there. Just ask the girlfriend

In my experience, Target is generally considered the best. (Not by me, though.)

                              Then Wal-Mart.

Some people go EES first, then Target.

KMart is always a distant third.
