  • HR manager - slow or doesn't care

I turned in a hand-written request for time off after Christmas (Dec. 26 or 27 through Jan. 3) so I can fly down to Florida and visit my family. I handed this in THREE weeks ago. My HR manager was fine with it and said she would talk to the store manager and get his approval, as it's ultimately up to him.

Well, she STILL hasn't fucking mentioned it to him! I asked her yesterday if she had and she was like, "Oh, not yet." I wanted to ask her, "And why the hell not? It's been nearly a month now!"

The more I sit and think about it, the angrier I get. She's there practically every weekday from 8 AM to 5 PM. I'm only there 12-18 hours a week. I guess I'm just going to have to track him down myself and ask him. I'll give her till Monday then after that, that's exactly what I'm going to do. I mean, it's her JOB to do this sort of thing, she's a "People Coach." I can't wait another month because I need to know soon, otherwise we'll be paying $1000 for a ticket from MI to FL.

I know she's busy but damn.. I've been more than patient. It probably doesn't seem like a big deal to her, but it is to me because I'm not going through Christmas not seeing my family just for a crappy retail job with a company that ultimately doesn't give a damn if I live or die so long as I show up when it's convenient for them. I'll quit before I do that.

I have a sinking feeling store manager will say nyet when HR manager finally gets around to telling him

I've said it before and I'll say it again: You can't spell "who cares?" without HR.

Can you send a note directly to the store manager (I take it you don't actually see him on a daily basis).

LOL IPF, that's a good one. It's funny to me how HR always gets the best, most consistent shifts. 8-5 every weekday, only working 1 half day every other weekend. Probably because they MAKE THEIR OWN SCHEDULE! Oh, how convenient! Granted, our HR manager has been there for 30+ years, but still. HR is probably the only "cushy" job left at Kfarts.

Hah, well, my Mom went ahead and bought the ticket because we really can't wait any longer. Ticket prices are just going to keep going up daily. I'm willing to be their SLAVE up until Christmas Eve at 10 PM but after that I'm taking off till the 3rd. At this point, I honestly don't care. My flight leaves at 7 AM on Christmas morning so I'll actually be able to have Christmas dinner with my family this year - I didn't get to do that last year. Family is way more important than stupid Kfart anyway. Who knows how many more Christmas dinners I'll be able to enjoy with my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins?

I'll just tell them that my Mom mistakenly thought I had already gotten the time approved for those dates and already booked the ticket, and since they're non-refundable.. I'll be unable to work 25th-3rd. They will be none the wiser.

I don't see why they wouldn't let me off. I'm willing to work all day Black Friday and Christmas Eve - the two biggies. It's not like I'm asking for Thanksgiving through Christmas off. Anyway, they've hired a ton of seasonal people so I doubt they'll need me after the holidays.

I'm most likely getting another job after the holidays anyway. I'm hoping to score a job at my college.. I can't take retail anymore. It's just not for me. Especially Kmart. They probably won't miss me.. or maybe they will. We're all just replaceable "bodies" anyway, right?

Had I been in your shoes, I would've absolutely said exactly that.

Well.. considering she could just go onto her computer in her office and change my hours for next week to 3.. I'd rather not. I'm not that kind of person either. But believe me, I was fantasizing about it in my head. I don't feel bad for going ahead and buying my ticket because I've been as patient as a saint waiting for this woman. So I don't care.

Seeing my family for the holidays > serving greedy customers returning and cashing in on the gifts their loved ones painstakingly picked out for them.

If they want to fire me (which I doubt they would), well, ! I'm sure they could find someone to replace me in an instant.

Yeah, that's the thing when dealing with those in a position of absolute power like that. I can feel the "what are you gonna do about it?" attitude of HR managers everywhere from here.

I think you're doing what's right. If they don't like it, they can take a flying fuck at a rolling donut.

Thanks for the words of support. While they may be annoyed at me, I don't think they'll flat out fire me. I'm too much of a quality employee, and that's hard to find with the huge turnover amongst the new hires there. I'm always on time, rarely call in sick, I don't steal (and I work in the cash office by myself), and I'm not rude to customers so.. it would be their loss, ultimately.

Well, my reasoning is this: they only schedule me for 12-15 hours a week, so they obviously don't need me that bad!
