  • Register Power Pack Died

Yesterday, one of the service desk registers went down. I tried to get it back up but ended up using the computer to call it in.

Eventually, a tech rep called and helped me out with the register that went down. It turned out that the power pack on the register died so he had me replace it with a power strip which I did. At first it didn't work and eventually I saw that I had unplugged the pinpad when the tech rep had me moving the plugs that were connected to the dead power pack. I plugged it back in and the light on the main register box lit up so I was able to get the register restarted.

The register ended up working again. I put the dead power pack in the cash room.

We had something similar happen one night at the first store I was at up here, except it was the UPS system for the whole front end worth of registers. The MOD came up and got in contact with the corporate help desk (I was worth more at the registers according to him). He ended up being told to connect the controller for the checklanes to a circuit strip. There was NO battery backup for something like a month or so. I could have just seen the power spiking and destorying the primary and secondary checklane controllers. :-p Of course, it would have happened on a night I was working with a skeleton crew and in the middle of a mad rush.

That would have been one hell of a telephone call to have made to the store manager, who of course, lived out of town. :-p

Any reason why your manager would think you were worth more at the registers? Where I work, I usually handle the technical stuff since my manager wouldn't know what to do.

My manager does pitch in when need be. If something technical needs taking care of, he usually has me do it since I know my way around machines.

The only cashier we had on that night was a ditz and we kept getting backed up with customers. Seriously, I would have rather been in the office working on the UPS dying.
