  • Need advice regarding being promoted to lead and getting certified

I need advice regarding my being promoted to lead and getting certified

Beginning in 2020 I transfered from the font end at the *major grocery store chain* to work at their fuel center as a fuel center associate

Earlier this year the current lead asked me if I would be interested in being the lead because she was transferring into the store to work at the front end in managerial role

Several weeks after that store management and the manager over the fuel center offered me that role

I was told that I would need to be certified to get a raise

The employee who trained me in 2020 became the back up lead twice... In 2020 and 2021 after the lead in 2020 left as well as when lead in 2021 left

He was never made the lead

He was just the interim lead

I asked for training advice after I let him know that I was promoted to lead

    He told me the following

I could e-mail the District Manager over the fuel center with my questions
The current lead at time is a good resource to train me regarding my being certifed since she was certified

However, when I spoke to her about this, I got the following response

Former interim lead needs to train you since I am busy being trained in my new role

I let him know that, and he told me he will do what he can but she needs to train you since she was certified and knows more that I do about that... Plus I worked the opening shift, and he worked the closing shift... So there was no way he could do that without my getting a ton of overtime, which our employer does not want

I let her know about that, and she told me the following

I will try to come by when I can for an hour to help you

    Unfortunately that never happened

However, she printed out 2 documents regarding the certification

I found most of the information either online or from documents that are in the fuel center

The information I could not find I asked her where that is so I can access it

When I asked her, she told me the following

I do not have time to train you because I am too busy

She also told me that the store manager is supposed to make arrangements for me to be trained at another location

She told me she will try to speak to him about that

What do I do in the meantime?

Wait for her to do that?

Ask the store manager about that?

Or just wait until something happens?

    This is frustrating.

Is there something else I could do instead?

Do you know what the certification covers? Does your company offer official "corporate training" for certifications such as the one you want? How comfortable would you feel taking the certification test without getting training? Do you feel you have enough knowledge that you could pass a test?

Are there training materials that the company has that you could use for self-study?

Is it possible that the one telling you she's "too busy" doesn't actually want you to get certified?

Why would she not want me to get certified since she was the one who printed out the certification documents and was the one who asked me if I would like to be the lead?

According to her, I am supposed to be trained at a different location, and then the DM over the fuel center comes over to certify me

There is not a test per say that I take according to her

The DM over the fuel center just comes to the fuel center to discuss what is covered to be certified

I have taken all the required company online training

The next step is to be trained at a different location

But how should I go about that?

Do I speak to the store manager about that?

Do I speak to her about that?

Speak with your immediate boss/supervisor. That sounds like the fuel center manager.
