  • I-Don't-Work-Here moment

So, the building I work in for The Client has a snack bar/convenience store on the first floor. It used to close at 2pm when the person who ran it would go home, but they recently put in a self-checkout point, which specifically only uses a cashless pay system which is specific to The Client. This cashless system works on the vending machines and in the cafeteria, and also in the snack bar. So now, after 2pm, this cashless system is the ONLY way to pay. It's free, they have the little tags at the kiosks around the facility. You scan your tag, you feed in some cash, and it's available immediately at any checkout point.

I'm down in the snack bar today, around 2:30, feeling a bit peckish, but I'm indecisive about what to get, just looking over the various chips, popcorn, etc. on offer, trying to pick one. Then this other gentleman in the place calls for my attention, asking for some help. He's standing at the cashless checkout kiosk, so I'm assuming he doesn't quite know how to use it, and I start to walk over, when he steps to one side and puts his items on the counter by the (empty) cash register.

I realize what he's expecting, and I of course tell him, "I don't work here."

He then spots my badge on my lanyard and starts apologizing. I explain that the snack bar doesn't have anyone working after two o'clock, and the cashless system is the only way to pay. He thanks me for the explanation, apologizes again, then puts his things back and walks out.

Ten-plus years out of it, but I apparently still have the retail stink on me.

You can check (them) out any time you like, but you can never leave!

J2K: Can confirm. The retail stench never leaves you completely.
