I've been reading a lot of July 4 stories about people working that day. I live in Canada so for us it's July 1. I was on my register when a woman marched up with a few items.
Customer: "I am FURIOUS that you are forced to work today! And even moreso that I am contributing to it!!"
(She'd forgotten a few items when she'd come in the day before.)
Me: "Ma'am, virtually nobody is forced to work today. They put up sign-up sheets for every stat holiday a couple of weeks ahead of time for volunteers. And since we get double time, there is never a shortage of volunteers."
Customer: *laughs* "Oh, okay. I feel marginally better now."
And off she went with her goods.
