Hey all, just thought I'd stick my head in and see how things are going.
I'm still working for the same guy. (See also: The Great Georgia Misadventure.) It's... going. Fortunately, it's interesting work. Doesn't pay all that great, but it beats the hell out of putting 100k+ miles on my car every year.
I'm in the interview process for a "senior engineer" role with a... let's just say large-ish company. At first it sounded great and I was ready to go... but it's been over 3 weeks since the last interview, and I'm kinda losing hope. There's one other viable candidate, and I'm... let's say 75% sure the other guy will get it... because I don't have a relevant degree. Or "real" professional experience in the relevant systems and languages. Or a bunch of other things that employers may or may not want.
Which sucks, because the pay would be borderline lifechanging for Mrs. Deserted and myself.
Don't get me wrong, I've been programming since 1983 -- yes, even while driving the cab -- and I have all kinds of weird projects online, many of which are relevant to the potential job to some degree... but in programming, that's not always enough -- especially with large corporations that were recently bought by venture capital... such as the potential employer... and especially especially when the software requires federal government certification.
It's funny that a second candidate magically appeared out of nowhere, when the recruiting firm's HR just told me less than a month ago that they'd been having trouble filling the role. (It involves a very niche programming language that is all-but-abandoned.) I just... I dunno what to think. I'm trying to keep a positive attitude, but... sigh. The bills don't get paid with happy thoughts.
