  • Short hours between shifts anyone?

Does anyone else have the kind of schedule where you could be working eight hours from say 3 to midnight one night, then have to get up less than five hours later to work another shift at the same place? How do you manage it?

I'm pretty certain this will be the last time I ever have to deal with this kind of shift. But it's taken it's toll on me all ready and I'm having the hardest time getting to sleep.

I think that's against Washington State law, so no. I don't even think the computers will let us schedule that way--something like 12 hours minimum between those shifts.

yeah, I'd check the legal status on that. I know in Canada it's a minimum 10 hours between shifts.

When I worked in Williamsburg I would constantly getting scheduled for 1pm - 10pm shifts then have to turn right around for an 8:15 - 4:15 shift the next day. I hated those because by the time I got home, ate dinner, and went to bed it would be midnight. Then I'd have to get up at 7 the next morning. I'm also one of those people who needs at least 8 hours or sleep for my day to not suck. That's why I like where I work now. The earliest I go in is 7:45am and the latest I get out is 5:00pm.

Happened to me once. I didn't mind, because I had the next 2 days off. So thinking it like that, I got a longer weekend

            12 hours between shifts? Boooooooooooo......

In Wisconsin it's only 8. And there have been a few times when I didn't even get that.

When I worked at Lowe's I could constantly get scheduled like this:
Friday 2 p.m. - 11 p.m. (the store closes at 10:30 on Fri. nights) and then be there Saturday morning at 5:30 a.m.
I've had to go to my department manager many, many times to get that changed. Yeah, I was a pain in the ass.

The worst one was the one week I worked overnights to set up the Christmas displays.
I was scheduled to open that morning, and leave around 3 p.m. I was to then come back at 9 p.m. and work overnight. Then on the last overnight, when I got off at 6a.m., I was scheduled to come back at 10 a.m. - 4 hours later!

Boy, did my manager (not department manager) love me that day. I went off! I didn't mind working overnight, but damn! At least let me get some time to eat, sleep, shave, sh*t, and all that other stuff that normal people do.

And the funny part? That one week of overnights was the ONLY time I was scheduled as a full time employee.

God, I hated working for Lowe's.

Just this weekend in fact... did my usual 3-10pm shift (actually started at 4 because of a family birthday party, my starting later was OK'd by the boss) then started at 8 this morning. Neither I nor the co-worker who was originally supposed to work that shift realised it when we arranged to swap.

(She wanted to swap shifts because she was going to a couple of parties last night... when she came in at 2pm she looked really seedy and half-seriously suggested she go home and I stay there until 6pm)
