We had someone break in once - crowbarred the door open.

We couldn't find a thing missing.

There was no money in the tills, so nothing there, and the drawers were always open at night. All the knives were still in their rack - we're talking knives of significant size. If they'd taken a pound of sprouts, we could see none gone.

    Baffling.

A $0.25 balloon from the discount table out front. The kid got caught and hauled back to the store by his mother, and I got to have a lovely conversation with him about whether a twenty-five cent balloon was worth a criminal record. Sad thing was, the kid was thirteen, more than old enough to know better...and why he needed a balloon with Aladdin printed on it I'll never know.

I did this as a kid. But my mom saw me and as she came towards me, I tossed it back in fast as though nobody woudl see. She made me apologise and paddled me. I think I was eight.

Until you said it was 'he' and he was thirteen, I almost thought you were the cashier then!

I've seen the gift cards be stolen before.

For a time, Lowe's sold phone cards too. (I think they still may) and we had a whole host of them get stolen. Only to recieve a complaint from the customer care line that someone had "purchased" twenty phone cards, only to have the cashier not activate any of them. Three guesses how many of the phone cards had been stolen?

The police were waiting when the idiot came in to get his appology and gift card from the store.

When I worked at this one low-rent clothing store, I caught someone trying to steal a wall rack. They were quietly moving clothes off the rack and unhooking it from the wall. Needless to say, they were banned.

Also have had the hooks in the changing rooms stolen.

This may be a tiny bit off topic, as it happened at my apartment building and not at work, but one year, someone stole the wrapped empty boxes under our lobby Christmas Tree.

A few months later, someone walked out of the building with all of the furniture from the downstairs lobby (two couches and several chairs).
