Today was just one of those days. Nothing spectacular happened, but all of the little things combined just made me happy.
It is odd. Since signing up a few days ago, I expected to do nothing but complain, but it seems like every time I come on, only good things come to mind. I guess I have sort of conditioned myself this way (you know, focusing on the good, not the bad?)
Anywho, to start off: today is my birthday. I never, never, EVER tell anyone it is my birthday. I dunno why, I just don't. I am not embarrassed, but I guess I get annoyed when I tell people it's my birthday, and they respond the exact same way: "Oh, it's your birthday? Well, happy birthday! How old does that make you?"
Well, all of today felt like a gift regardless. I was working today (I didn't feel the need to ask for the day off) and just did everything right. Problems came up and were resolved swiftly. I had plenty to do, so I was not bored, but still had time to slip into the forums to write. A few things felt particularly nice...
First, I helped a student who had come over from Nigeria to study with his resumè. I don't know why, but my community college has a very robust foreign exchange program, one of the best in the country (community college-wise).
I then had to install a printer in a distant lab that I normally don't work in. I enjoyed the walk, and when I got there, several teachers were working there. One was an anatomy teacher whom I had done lots of work for the previous year setting up Skype so that a... I dunno what they are called... "dictation-taker" could hear him over a microphone, type out what he said, and send the transcript to a deaf student in another state who was taking the course. Long story, I know, but I must say he had a great personality and I was rather fond of him, so I was happy, surprised, and more then a little pleased to see him.
Also working in the lab was a nice, elderly Lady, E. I had not met her before, but as I worked, she chatted with me, commenting how she liked how my vest and work shirt matched (I had chosen my shirt to match my vest, so I was pleased.) As I was leaving, she asked me suddenly if I knew anything about the scanner in the lab. I turned and answered "Me?", and I must have looked like a deer caught in headlights, because she smiled and said, "Nevermind, I can tell you don't." I might normally be offended by a comment like that, but the way she said it was so sweet and understanding that it actually made me smile.
Finally, getting back to the lab, I found a flash drive in a tower, left by it's user. I had just loaded into my PC and opened a document to check for a name, and sure enough it was up at the top of the paper: Jay (name changed, of course).
Just as I was writing up a label for it (so he could pick it up when he came in), I see a student walk in and start searching all around the computer I had just taken the drive from. He seemed panicked.
"Jay," I called. He turned and looked at me, startled and confused. "Yes?" he answered tentively. "I believe this is your's, then?" I say, producing the 1GB flash drive. His expression was priceless, and his thanks plentiful.
Damned if I don't feel great after a day like that. Now I think I am gonna go home and get me some birfday cake.
*edit* AND I am already past the moderator validation phase so my things get posted right away! Today just keeps getting better!
