at mine? a cup, a mouthpiece, a set of sparring gloves(these amount to a half inch of foam cover for your knuckles....), and a pair of sparring foot(again, 1/2 foam...) protectors are all thats "required" to attend class.
Most of the time, you are allowed to hit as hard as the other person hits you... but you have to keep in mind the target zones allowed for your belt.
by the time you hit brown belt, everything goes except for any strike that makes the head whip back (hard face shots basicly) (brown is the belt right before black at my school)http://www.vilecity.com/index.php?r=221271

Depends, usually none because it's meant to be light/no contact sparring. But when we're practicing for WTF sanctioned tournaments it's a minimum of chest and head protector and mouthguard, with cups, mits and shin guards recommended.Quoth Igorina View PostHow much protective gear do your schools make you wear when you spar?

I haven't been in a dojo for 2 years now but from what I recall:Quoth Igorina View PostHow much protective gear do your schools make you wear when you spar?
I didn't wear much, just gloves, a helmet, and foot protectors. Our instructor believed in recreating a fight as much as possible. With limits though. I do wish I would have invested in shin guards, shin connecting with shin is not an experience that I'm going to forget.
We also wore kendo armor when we practiced kendo.
For throws it was just a helmet.
heh, K (Best fighter) took a punch to the throat and kept going. If the fight lasted for a good minute or so she would definitely win but if it went longer then 2 minutes then she knew she was going to have a hard time against me (We had a competition and even she said that I was the only one who could beat her). Hilarious thing is that I could keep fighting for as long as 5 hours and this would be after a day of an intense workout in cross-country.Hey, I ended up with the concussion, but I won the bout. But should it come to street fighting, I will remember the effectiveness of a back fist to the temple.
I should post stories about the sanchin kata, nothing puts fear in you until you hear that your Sensei might break a board on your shoulder while doing a kata. Speaking of which, I might just do sanchin, easy to practice in a small amount of space. The Grand Galactic Inquisitor hears all and sees all.

We have a kata called Tam Tui (not sure on the spelling) from my understanding, very few people can do it 100% complete.
It has alot of rolls where as soon as you are coming up, you have to perform a jumpkick. 12 times, in each direction, and there are 3 or 4 of these sets (so almost 100 jks i believe), maybe more... you need atleast 60 feet of space in 1 direction minimum to pull off this kata.
I used to hear my instructors talking that if you could complete it 1 time, in 1 go, that was your workout for the day. ( i may not be giving it the credit it deserves either. But Ive only seen my instructor teach part of it 1 time. so i have no idea what the kata looks like.)http://www.vilecity.com/index.php?r=221271
