  • Advice about finding new job..

I have no management experience that I can put on my resume. I could explain why, but it won't matter -- since I can't explain why on my resume either. It mostly has to do with the fact that I am gay and when my employer found out, I was, in basics "let go." At the time, I was very young and just accepted it (and now I kick myself over it).

Well, the other day, I was gallivanting in a mall I had never been to, roughly 45 minutes from where I live. I was walking around and saw one interesting store in the whole place, so I went in. I ended up talking to the manager for over 2 hours about life in general.

At the end of our conversation, she asked me to fill out an application. I told her I didn't know if I could because I live quite a distance away. She said, well I want you as my Assistant Manager. I was VERY excited.

Now, here is the thing. I turned in an application while I was there (not as good as it could have been, either, because I was thrown a loop). I didn't know what to say regarding my experience. I have retail experience for about 5 years, and I told her that. I also told her I was looking for a career for at least the next 5 years.

I guess my question is, do you think I still have a shot at this since the manager there really liked me and even had me meet some of her employees, telling them I was applying for AM?

Should I spruce up my resume and put in my two week notice at my current job? Or does this sound not promising?

I shall say this only once

    Go. For. It.!!!

Even though the travelling time will be a bit of a grate, the experience of management will look fantastic, if the store manager wants you that bad already I don't see why you're not applying?
A PSA, if I may, as well as another.

I don't blame you for being excited about leaving that current hell-hole you're at now - but DON'T give 2 weeks notice until you've been offered, and accepted another job.

This is, of course, assuming you're not independently wealthy or can afford to be without a job, in which case - GO FOR IT!

Well, I have ANOTHER back-up job lined up already...so I am guaranteed employment. That same day, the manager that hired my GF promised me a job (and is even letting me go with her to her training in another city, to hang out -- said he would start me as soon as we got back).

When I asked him if he was hiring for management, he said he was hiring for whatever I wanted.

The only thing I am worried about is money, in between those days. Bills. I don't know if I am going to be able to get them paid. But I think my parents will help me out this time. Maybe.

Ahh! I just called her back since it's a far drive to check if she would be there on Monday. She's ready to set up an interview -- on Monday!

OK...now I need to sell myself like there is no tomorrow. The two weeks is going in. If worse comes to worse, I'll just apply at McDonalds, where the pay will be the same.

I'm letting my GF do the resume. Oh boy am I excited!

There is an old saying that is so very true... "It's not what you know but who you know". In this case it sounds like the manager liked - you -. You don't need to polish, just go back for the interview and be yourself and be honest. You have a really good chance of getting it I would say. Don't quit your job until you get it though..

                yeps... what they said :P

I think personality counts more than anything (and, going by posts on this site, esp under MiM - anything also includes ability :P not that there seems to be a lot of personality there either.....). You'll be fine! At either of them - so... which one do you want? (as a suggestion, going to the one with your GF could be... interesting... who do you talk to when you're not in a good mood? Can you keep home and work separate? you know what I mean??)

                GOOD LUCK!!!

Go Cas! Cash that karmic paycheck for having to put up with FE for so long!

If she was sold on you from just talking to you, just be yourself- or the same self you were when you were chatting. Fantastic. The commute time will get easier as time goes on- I have a 45 minute plus commute currently and it killed me the first couple weeks, but now it's gotten easier. Just make sure that you get plenty of sleep if you are driving a long distance. There are few things more dangerous than being 10 minutes from home and a nice nap and starting to fall asleep at the wheel. I don't know about you, but sunset makes me sleepy- something about the light- so if I know I'm a little tired I stay late at work until it is dark or leave early enough to avoid driving during sunset.

A word to the wise, though: If she's hiring an assistant manager of the street based on personality, this manager might be a little hard to work with. I worked for one like that before. She had trouble getting anyone who could put up with her, so she hired for management with very little experience. However, I still say go for it- even if it's a difficult work environment and a long commute, you can't beat the chance to put Assistant Manager on your resume.
