Does anyone else get a lot of this?

I used to work the reception desk for the company I'm with, and when we'd put in an ad that we were hiring, I'd be the first line to decide whether or not you seemed like a good candidate. I'd keep notes on people who called, in, too, in case they filled out an application later.

I would never presume to actually dispose of an application, however. The most I'd do is put a note on the front stating my observations.

I must admit that I am halfway guilty of the "parent doing the application" (keywork halfway). In my case when I was looking for my first job my mom was a regular at carls jr and kinda sorta knew the manager... she was talking with him making small talk and she mentioned I was looking for a job, the manager already knew who I was and basically said "if he's really looking for a job have him show up friday, black shoes, black pants, white undershirt, he starts at 3pm"
(in all fairness though, he knew that I had already picked up an application so he knew I would be dropping one off)

that said... I can't stand it when parents do the application... that's one thing I love about working in a call center... the first interview is always done at time of application at almost all the centers... makes it nearly impossible for helicopter parents to get their kids jobs their without making them at least somewhat responsible.

I remember some years ago I ran into an old manager of mine. We got to talking and I asked her how things were going with the hiring and staffing situation. I was running my own store at the time and was always willing to pick up tips from other managers.

That was until she told me that part of her interview process included the parents. You see she was having a lot of trouble hiring and keeping staff. This town was fairly affluent and most of the kids were getting a job for "the experience" not necessarily for the money since mumsy and daddy would pay for everything else. The problem she would run into was that the parents didn't take junior's job very seriously and had no problem pulling them out of work for every little family event or trip.

This meant that she was often short staffed, some times weeks at a time. That's right folks, the parents were making the kids get jobs to teach them how to be responsible, but had no problem forcing them to pull a disappearing act at the drop of a hat. So she would bring the parents in to the interview to make sure that they understood the expectations for junior.

That was one piece of advice I refused to use.

My sister, when she owned her cafe, had an employee's mother come in and yell at her because "She didn't see why her family should have to rearrange their entire vacation because Precious wasn't able to get the week off work."

My sister responded that rescheduling or not rescheduling their vacation was their choice, and has nothing to do with her. She is trying to run a business here, and The Jones Family's Carribbean Getaway is not her business or her concern. Furthermore, if "Precious" is adult enough to get a job, she is adult enough to discuss the requirements of the job without Mommy's intervention.

The mom tried to say something else, but I remember my sister putting up her hand to stop her and saying something like, "Ma'am, I refuse to discuss your daughter's terms of employment with anyone other than your daughter. Its a violation of her privacy."

I think involving parents in the interview process would cause more problems than it would solve. It's like giving them permission to stick their noses into everything.

Sometimes you have to make ajustments for local conditions. The manager that Gate was talking about may have had a good idea for her area. I doubt many of us work with mostly people who aren't in it for the money. I agree it doesn't make it a good idea for all locations, though.
