  • Horrible first impressions

This thread is dedicated to first impressions of coworkers. Behaviors or quotes from coworkers on your first meeting them that just gave you a bad taste in your mouth.

My two examples are DipShit and Daddy DipShit.

DipShit was escorted into the room to meet me, and the first thing out of his mouth was "I hear you haven't been doing this long!", and I'm thinking to myself "Wanna make something of it, assface?" and he then proceeded for the rest of the night to interrupt me every time I tried to explain stuff and get the ball rolling. He spewed non stop verbal diahrrea of his extensive techy "knowledge" and "experience"....which he later proved to have none and was totally full of crap.

Daddy DipShit was escorted into the room to meet me, and the first thing out of his mouth was "I wanted 2nd shift janitorial!" and he asked me to show him where the internal job postings were so he could apply for one. He went on and on about his past jobs and extensive experience blah blah blah blah......like I was even listening. I kept thinking "Dude, I didn't hire you, I didn't give you this job....you were more than welcome to decline this position and ask for a different one, yet you chose to accept and go through the entire orientation and hiring process and NOW you complain? Fuck off."

AAFH2 missed her first interview, was a half hour late to her rescheduled interview, and, to top it off, showed up a half hour late for the first 3 weeks.

    I was ready to kill.

Christmas temp guy from several years ago: "Hey man, do the security cameras work in this place?"

He didn't last long, but as far as I know he wasn't busted for stealing. I guess he was more incompetent than anything.

Security Chap at my last job,

        Missed the first interview

        Missed the second interview

        Missed the third interview

Attended the fourth, only got the job as there was no other applicant

Swore at chavs on the shop floor.

Finally got fired for throwing (yes there was not contact between chav and floor) chav into racking.

Is now working for a private security firm.

Previously worked for the Police, left at the end of his probation as he was told resign or be fired.

I can't rightly recall horrible first impressions I got about other co-workers, but I do know I must have given a bad first impression to the lady who hired me for my first job. I think one of the questions was to describe yourself in three words, and I said, "Funny, artistic, intelligent!"

She thanked me, walked me into the hallway, shook my hand, and said she was generally interested in hiring me - at which point I thanked her, then promptly turned, opened the door, and tried to exit the room through the broom closet.

Hmm.... most people here start off fairly well. It's not till later that it goes downhill.

But I can remember one woman. She was hired to be the personal secretary of the old boss (so I could have more time for the rest of my duties) and one of her comments on her first day was, "I was highly respected at my last position, and I want you to know I demand a lot of respect."

Yeah, she didn't last the week.

Having just learned the definition of a 'Chav', I fail to see how this is a bad thing?

When I started working at IBM, the individual who was assigned to train me had the following first words to say:

"As of right now, you don't know anything until I teach it to you. Got it?"

Yea, we didn't get along very well. Thing was, I knew more about the AS400 than he did, even though he wouldn't admit it.

This was the same individual who would call in on his nights off, drunk off his a** and bother us, and eventually said something inappropriate to one of the female managers...

Heh--I was the one who gave a first bad impression. We'd hired a really attractive girl in our departement, and I was being ribbed about it by another co-worker at the time.

I was going off on a rant about how I didn't really care how good-looking she was (and she was--oh God, she was...) as long as she could do her job and do it well.

3/4 of the way through, she walked up behind me. Much apologizing happened soon after.

I think that's generally true, iviles...unless the person in question was acting out of character for whatever reason - bad day, etc.

But yeah, they're typically pretty accurate.

At orientation, a girl who was hired for the same store as me was seated next to me (it was all assigned so you'd sit near future co-workers; it was done at a regional office). She chatted a lot with the guy on the other side of her about mutual acquaintances and parties and hanging around (basically sounding like a pair of idiots). Turns out she went to primary school with my brother's girlfriend. I asked the gf and apparently they were friends. lol.

Anyway, she shows up on time to the orientation. Is a few minutes late to the first training shift, which is not at "our" store, it's at one ages away from where any of us live. Fine, but she was wearing her school uniform, not the store's. And she didn't bring her manual (given out at orientation). And she didn't have a pen.

She turned out better at "our" store, just a little slow/disinterested in the way that many high school students in their first jobs are (and as I surely would have been if I'd had to work through high school). Except a sleazy, icky former co-worker now tries to chat her up, even though he's 18 and should be focusing on girls his own age. When I heard about this, I was very upset and felt protective of her. Which shows that I guess she turned out okay after all.

PS The former co-worker is the kind of guy that it's awesome to date in high school cos he has a car and he smokes and he goes to parties and drinks. But when you finish high school you're like "hey, why are we dating again? I could date a smarter guy with a job/education/manners."
