  • Rounding change (for those who work registers).

Ok, so I was wondering, who rounds change when running a register?

I do it all the time, but only in the customers favor. If they're suppose to get 4 cents back, I'll give em a nickel, but if they're suppose to get 6 cents, I'll give em the penny too.

Now I feel I'm able to do this, because there's always at least one person who walks away without their change. So I'll just toss it in the registers (unless it's quarters... I keep those), so it makes up for my "rounding errors" or whatever you wanna call it.

Just curious about who else does this, and what's you're cut off. I always round $.04 to $.05, and I'll round $.03 about half the time as well, but that's it.

I used to be able to balance my till to the penny, so no I never did that, I can see why you do though.
A PSA, if I may, as well as another.

Yeah I don't want to count pennies all day long. lol

Plus, I have to count out the drawer by hand when I end my shift. So every roll of coins I have to crack open, is that many more loose coins I have to count later.

Call me lazy, but we all do it. The first thing we do when switching shifts is to take some of the singles from our drawer, and trade em out for change in our co-workers drawer. Just to lessen the chance of having to unroll our own change.

Oh, and our tills are NEVER exact. When the leagues pay they're always under by at least a few cents. (The leagues pay tax, but we round their league payment off, because it's easier on everyone for a 100 person to pay $10 each, rather than $10.07 each)

Same here. However, I would sometimes do this or even spot them up to 50 cents if they were really nice. The sucky ones would NEVER get a break, even for a single penny.

I'm another one of those that used to balance to the penny, so I never did this.

I also didn't work at a place that sold food or anything that cost less than $23.95. (ticket booth at Medieval Times)

I have to cash out drivers with varying opinions of pennies- some like them, at least 2 loathe them with a passion- so yeah, I round off a lot. It normally balences out. And if it's off it's normally under $0.25.

Having Rounded currency with the lowest unit at 5c is convenient. At that point rounding is rare.. I do only if we run out of 5 cent pieces, and when we have as soon as I explain theirs none left nobody really whinges. I'd say 20% of customers give it back or say keep it when theirs only 5 cents change to be given out, or just leave it on the counter.

i had someone round away in their favor once...

my change was supposed to be $x.26, and they gave me $x.25. albeit, it's just a penny, so i didn't say anything.

I like my tills to balance as close as possible, however, I am lazy about counting change. I have better things to do than count pennies. I usually get the change out of the drive thru that has been dropped the day before. Then my till balances within a dime, usually.

Today I got a 46 second window average, with a 2:11 total time running D/T by myself, so they don't complain if I'm a tad short.

One of the last places I had to worry about cash was the money room for a vending machine company. I was the first person the company had ever had to balance the money room to the penny. I got a $50 gift certificate for dinner at a fancy restaurant (this was in 1983-ish) for doing so.

I also got to keep all the foreign coins that came in--and since we serviced an Air Force Base, that was quite a bit!
