  • Giving a 2 weeks notice or just up & quit?

If someone is going to quit a job that they're not too crazy about then what's the best way to quit? Should you give a 2 weeks notice & endure it for 14 days or just say "screw it" & quit & walk out or not come in at all?
    What do you guys think?

I say give a two-week notice. You never want to burn a bridge, because you never know when you need to cross back over!

I'll third the two week notice.

NEVER burn bridges. Even though you may hate the job, and the boss has an IQ below room temperature, you never know when you'll bump into them again.

Been there, done that, have the grey hair and the PFO letters.

My last job I gave three weeks notice (I was leaving at the end of the month and needed that last paycheck).

This new job o' mine? Eh........these people are treating me like a lab-rat so I'm gonna hang 'em to dry. It's only been a month anyways and I can't afford the gas to get up there every day. So if they're gonna treat me like dirt then I'm leaving.

While giving 2weeks + notice is good.... sometimes your boss/work will be jerks about it and make your life hell for the last days. Just as a warning.

I'm also with those who say 2 weeks notice. It benefits everyone in the end. The only time you should probably just up and quit is if you KNOW that you will be let go that very day if you give notice. (Yeah..been there, done that. Blah.)

It depends. If they treat you like shit already, then just up and quit. If you give a 2 weeks notice, and then they start making your job a living hell, then don't wait the rest of the 2 weeks, quit. 2 week notices are overrated. The fact is, sometimes it's the employer who is the one in the wrong, and you shouldn't have to put up with it.

I've only done that once, and I don't need to tell that story again.

The only time I'd see it fit to just quit showing up would be after you put in your two weeks and they start cutting your hours or just flat out don't give you any anymore.

Two weeks notice, but there's always the chance that they'll tell you not to bother coming back at all.

Two weeks notice is probably best, at least to allow the courtesy of your management finding a replacement and training them during that time. If you are relocating, try to see if you can work something out with your manager(s) to allow for enough time to pack, look for a place to live, etc. I might be in that situation shortly, and that's ideally what I would do.

I'll also chime in for 2 weeks notice, even 1 week notice.

Because like others have said, you never want to burn that bridge. You never know when you might need a job back, or need a reference.

For example, I'd love to just punch the owner of this company right in the mouth on my last day, but since I've been here since I was 16 and have no other expierence in this field it may not be good.

If this is the sort of job where your co-workers will have to scramble to cover your shifts, please give 2 weeks notice. We recently had 2 people just up and leave in the middle of the shift. As a result of that, I haven't had a day off in three weeks, and won't have one for a little over a week.
But I've been there when you give the notice and your managers give you shit. That can suck it.
So if you like your co-workers, management is being mature about it, and you don't have much experience in the field.... notice.
If your co-workers are tools, management are being douchewaffles, and you have enough references... tell them to choke on it.

If it's a case where the job just plain sucks but you have no issues with the staff, then give the two weeks. If you can make a case for hostile work enviroment, then personally, I wouldn't give them the time of day.

Give the two weeks when you can. I had a job that was giving me panic attacks and I still managed to finish the schedule posted (1 week).
