  • So I Quit (Long)

Yeah, it finally happened ... after working in the pharmacy on and off for 9 years, I'm done!

It's sort of a long story, but here goes ...

As some of you know, I work nights in a chain pharmacy as an AM. It's my second job, and I basically put the money directly into savings, so that I might actually be able to afford a house on this island some day.

Well, near the beginning of the summer, we got a new SM. He seems like a nice guy, but he's pretty much useless. His answer for everything is "I'm an old man ... I can't do that." That's why he can't break down our trucks, that's why he can't climb ladders, etc ...

There are 2 other AM's in my store: C and K. K is a full-time employee and a full-time college student. C is a fullt-ime employee. K works hard and genuinely wants the store to do well. C is actively searching for another job, and has little or no interest in anything in our store.

So basically, with the new SM doing nothing, and C doing nothing, it's up to me and K to pretty much keep the store running. Now my availability is limited by my day job, and the night classes I'm taking. K's availability is limited by her classes as well, so there's only so much we can do.

Anyway, since the new SM came in, everything's been getting worse. Our stockroom is filling up with overstock (not seasonal/ad items, just overstock), the sales floor looks disgusting (SM and C like to re-do half empty endcaps, and then take the items previously on the endcaps and just shove them on a shelf), payroll has been messed up (because C insists on doing it), and our bills have been wrong for months because SM doesn't know how to use our billing system.

So that's the basic aggravation. Here's the advanced aggravation ...

For my day job, I am periodically required to travel. It could be for a day, or it could be for a month. I could have 6 months notice, or I could have 1 day's notice. I was hired with everyone (old SM and DM) knowing this. Apparantly, new SM has a problem with this. He doesn't feel I'm committed enough to the store. Well, there's nothing I can do about that. My day job is my career. My night job is pocket change. Which do YOU think I'm gonna choose?

I was basically away on business for the entire month of August, and SM is still a little bent about it. I can see he's not going to let up on this any time soon, and I have some more travelling scheduled in February, so I know it's just a headache waiting to happen.

Next is my knee. I moved at the beginning of August. Long story short, the guys who were supposed to help me move mine and my father's stuff bailed last minute, so I had to do it. I spent 2 days moving boxes and furniture, and the last thing I had to move was a sectional couch. While doing so, my knee gave out while going up a flight of stairs. It just completely buckled and I fell on my face.

While I was away on business, I spent most of my time crawling around a plane on my hands and knees (I work on planes), and it didn't help my knee. After I got home, it gave out on me a few more times, and it was starting to get a little painful. I went to the doctor and, after some tests, he said he thinks I had a slight tear in my meniscus. I still have to go for an MRI to verify this, as the soft tissue damage won't show up on an x-ray. I can walk around just fine, but the doctor said I should watch the heavy lifting and climibing of ladders for a few days.

The next day at work, I mention this to SM, and he gets bent because he wanted me to climb the 12' ladder and put the cases of summer packaway on the overhead in the stockroom. I told him I couldn't do it that day, especially since some of the cases had bags of charcoal in them. He gets bent about that, and I get the sense he thinks I'm bullshtting him. I've never given him any reason to think I'd lie, but he doesn't believe me. Nice.

Anyway, things keep getting worse. SM does less and less, as does C. SM goes on vacation last week, and C just has a field day. She gets the opening shift every day, and basically came in, sat on her ass, and did nothing for 5 days. She would wait until about 20 minutes before K or I would come in, and then move some boxes around to make it look like she's been working. Then she tries bossing me around. First of all, we have the same job title and position, so there's no call for that. And second, what she's trying to get me to do is the opposite of what SM and DM wanted done that week. I'm not stupid. I know what needs to be done.

So it's been no picnic recently, but the past 3 days sealed the deal for me. First, on Saturday, C opened and I closed. She left 3 hours early without any notice, and left me shorthanded. Nice.

Our store policy with cigarettes is I need to enter a date of birth. If you look of age, I'll just ask for the date, not ID. So about 2 minutes to closing, some guy wants to buy cigarettes. I get them, scan them, and I'm prompted for his DOB. I ask politely, and he goes off on me, telling me that he's never had to do this and it's none of my business, etc ... He eventually gives me a date, then says he's never had this problem before, and I politely say that there's a first time for everything. He then replies with "Yeah, there is a first time for everything, smart ass. Tonight could be the first time you walk out of here and get your face smacked into the curb." I turn to him, smile and say "Well, that would be the first time, but I don't think it's gonna happen tonight." He gets pissed then tries reading my name tag. I spell my name out for him, and point out the complaint number in the receipt. He leaves without incident.

After that, I go back to the office and notice that the floor in the hallway is wet, and it kind of stinks. I open the door to the men's room, and find the toilet to be blocked and overflowing, and it's "contents" spilled out all over the floor. Fucking great!!!!!!!

Needless to say I've just about had it. Monday was the last straw.

I came in and C was sitting in the office, doing nothing as usual. I ask her what she had the kids doing, and she completely ignored what SM and DM left for them, and had them doing whatever she wanted, which included breaking down the truck for her. I spent the better part of Saturday going through and sorting all of the Christmas stock we had in the back, as per SM and DM. In about an hour, she had completely ruined all that work, and just moved everything around and mixed it in.

I stop the kid who was working on it, and tell him I'll go through the rest. I'm a little bent, but it's not his fault, it's C's. She comes in the back and says "Well, I'm just doing what I was told." I inform her (not so politely) that she's not doing what she was told. I told her that the note SM left and the e-mail DM sent both say to sort the Christmas stock. She says she never saw them. I said it's not my fault she can't read. I mean, I just got so sick of the laziness and the stupidity. She says whatever and then leaves.

Then sshe comes back in and starts in with me: "If you have a fucking problem with me, you better tell me. I know you're always checking up on my work ... blah blah blah ..." At this point, I stopped listening. Finally, i snapped. I turned to her and said "God, will you just shut the fuck up and go the fuck home!"

Her jaw almost hit the ground. She told me to fuck off and then left.

I called SM right away, and told him what happened, and then I gave my notice. He tried to talk me into staying, and we were on the phone for about an hour, but ultimately, he said he knew why I was leaving. He said he knew she was a problem, but he couldn't get rid of her. He also said he understood about it just being too much. He said he'd call back later to discuss it with me more. I went about my night.

A few minutes later, one of the kids came up to me and said that C called him. She asked him what i was doing and if I was taking it out on anyone and to write it down if I did anything wrong. Since she treats all the kids like shit, he came right to me and told me. When Sm called back, he said C called him and said I came in cursing and screaming at her for no reason. I explained again what happened, and pointed out that I wasn't the first one to curse or scream. I then told him about C's call, as well as all the other shit, which he seemed to have no clue about (i.e. how she treats employees, leaving early, etc..)

He said that now that he knew all that, he'd deal with her himself.

So, long story short, I gave my notice, C's basically on her way out, SM is still lazy, and K gets screwed over.

Nice how that works out, huh?

The only one I feel sorry for is K. But he/she (I didn't catch it) Probably understands, and maybe the DM knows how dumb the SM is and will actually promote from within...

      Holy hell!

I'm trying to find an out too, because my coworkers are just as batty if not battier than yours. Kudos to you for telling them where to shove it! They need you more than you need them! (Although I do feel bad for K).
"This is the first time I've seen you look ugly, and that makes me happy!"
