  • called in sick

so this morning i called in sick to work. I've been fighting off a cold/sore throat since Monday and last night my voice finally gave out Since I work in a call center the lack of voice is an issue.

I get up this morning and my voice is better but still strained and it feels like my brain is going to fly out of my head every time i sneeze I could have probably pushed myself through a full days work but since im leaving the company no later then next Friday anyway I decided to call it in

was that sucky of me ? I hate calling in sick

It's never bad to call in sick when you are actually sick.

Last year, during tax season, the temp came in with some godawful cold that she kept insisting 'wasn't contagious'. I told her many times to get out of the office and go home.

Of course, what happened? The last week of January, I caught what she had. Since I'm not a temp, and I was already working 14 hour days, there was NO WAY I could have called off without causing some serious repercussions. So I had to come in to work. I basically came in, shut my office door, and worked sick. Really sick. I really shouldn't have been out of bed.

She was let go on April 16th. No, it wasn't a coincidence.

If you are sick, please, stay home.

How do you think really bad colds and flus spread around so quickly?

People come to work knocking on death's door, because they don't have any sick time or insurance or vacation time to take off......

I've done it before. And I got lots of people sick. Well, maybe they already were?

We can thank certain kinds of managers for this too....ones who browbeat emps into coming in sick.

Try this. My job has no sick time. Plus, it's very labor intensive. PLUS, we have a quota each night. So I get sick...lately it's been every 2-3 months. I have to decide whether I'm sick enough to warrant staying home with no pay, or whether I think I can meet my quota despite being sick and oxygen deprived due to chest congestion. (Doesn't this mean I'm risking pneumonia?)

I may have mentioned this before, but I went to work REALLY sick one week. It's one of those colds where you feel alright when you first wake up, but it deteriorates really quickly. Then you feel fine one day, then bedridden the next. The worst night I wound up clocking out early, which was acceptable. The next night I felt alright and met my quota. The next night I felt bad again a few hours into my shift and tired out halfway through, yet pressed on anyway, missing my quota by 2 loads. Then I had my days off and was able to rest and get better for the next week.

Come Monday morning (my 3.5 days off start Sunday morning) I get a phone call from HR. "We're calling to discuss your transfer back to over-the-road driving." Say what? My voice is still audibly hoarse and I had to stop the conversation several times to cough for a few minutes to clear out my lungs. No pity from HR. They begrudgingly allowed me to keep my job with a warning not to let it happen again. I asked what happens if, say, the train is moving cars at the mill and blocking the road, causing me to fall behind quota, and they say, "Oh, well, you can't help that, so it's okay if that happens." Like I can help being sick...

The kicker is that the few weeks before this transpired I was exceeding quota fairly often. After this mess, I have figured out how to time myself to give them EXACTLY what is expected of me and not a bit more. It's not like they pay extra for exceeding quota, and I don't feel like I should do them any more favors if they can't understand the dilemma of being not sick enough to stay home completely, but not well enough to haul ass all night long to meet quota, and not having paid sick time to make the solution much simpler.

            Stupid HR...
