that throwing me on our new "Self scan" machines my last hour of my shift today as the monitor, on a busy weekend, with NO TRAINING whatsoever, was a really really stupid move on my store's part?

I said Nuh-UH, this is not a good idea, lady, I need to be trained on it first. She goes "We have no one else, it's easy, just learn as you go."

I pestered my co worker for the hour I was on there, and got yelled at by many people because I could not address the immediate mess ups BECAUSE NO ONE SHOWED ME. Then I got a headache.

Customers just learning to use em + cashier who isn't trained = a tough time.

That being said, I caught on the basics right away, but no one told me eff all about the quirky stuff.

I just didn't think it was a good thing to do, lol. And I am on it for 8 hours tomorrow too.... I think I better say "I refuse unless you give me my 9.5 minute tutorial." eh?

It's amazing how businesses so often fail to properly train their staff, considering the cost-benefit ratio. In the long run, everyone benefits from a staff that knows what they're doing.

Sunday the manager pulled me aside and asked "C'mon be frank with me, now. How are they working out?"

I was frank. There will be a stressful period where the customers will need to learn how to use them, but it would really help if the cashiers were TRAINED before we got thrown to the wolves.

It's not fun when we don't know the passwords when the thing locks on us, it's not fun when the palm pilot thingy batteries die because no one knows where the key to the cupboard underneath us (which contains the charger). It's no fun when no one shows us how to reboot one station that freezes for no reason and the customer freaks out and leaves her groceries.

If they showed us that and LOTS more, before hucking us out there, things MAY go smoother.

Common sense? Not here it seems/

Companies consider these kinds of jobs "unskilled." In other words, how much training could possibly be required to do your unskilled job?

Yeah, I'd love to watch some of these corporate officers come in and do these jobs.

hehe, I'd like to see my store manager trying to run a self check, let alone corporate

where I work they stuck me on self check after about a 60 second tutorial from the person I was relieving, and I did good enough, but most of it was just helping people because the scanners sucked(they replaced them YAY!!!!!) and I only had 4 terminals to run
