This isn't really a suck but I'm not sure where to put it.

I had a student come by and ask about borrowing one of the thumb drives we have in the lost and found. (Apperantly someone had let her before although they were probably breaking the rules by doing so)

She needed to send her paper to her professor that was due at midnight and it's "12:01am!!! and the wireless is down so I can't send from my laptop!!!"

This is when I offered to lend her one of the library's lovely ethernet cords so she could send it that way which she accepted.

She seriously sounded as if she was on the verge of tears and I'm not very good with emotions. I actually remember this student, I had a class with her once and she's the kind of over achiever that stresses out way to easily and needs to calm down a bit. I don't know what class this was for but I don't know any professors that won't accept a paper at say... 12:05am if the deadline was 12am.

Oh well, this spring I'll have finished my BA and will head to law school next fall. Let's all pretend that finals aren't around the corner and they'll be coming in hoardes.

You're going to encounter plenty of high stress over achievers in law school, man. Law schools all grade on a strict curve specifically to make everyone competitive with one another. Some of them get really emotionally invested in the process, I've seen it happen. It's not pretty.

Yeah, I know there's stress to achieve but I've seen way to many panic attacks from the undergrads. Maybe I just don't spend enough time at the law school except for the occasional lunch and to use their library but they seem to be so much clamer then the undergrads. Pre-med freshmen are the worst, they're going to cause themselves an early grave.

I'm not in law school but I am one of those people. Judge me if you will but I apparently produce better assignments when working under stress (even though I always have everything done well in advance) and I expect the best possible grades.
I don't want to just graduate - I intend to do so at the top of my class.

And a side note: my school has a strict On Time policy when it comes to assignments. None of ours are due through email at midnight, and are instead due at the beginning of the particular class, but as soon as class starts the door get closed and if you come in five minutes late it's 5% off your mark (unless you had he foresight to email your assignment ahead of time, which I always do because I trust nothing).

I'm not saying stress or trying to get good grades is a bad thing. I aim for A's too, but it becomes a problem when you're always stresssed. And the homework due dates are set by the professor, most want it before you walk out of the class the day it's due.

First off, stressing over assignments that much isn't healthy, that and I think there is a saying about prior planning that could apply.

And only slightly OT, at least my experience in an accounting major that accounting isn't very competitive as far as the whole "I must be at the top of the class at all expense"... we actually *gasp* help each other, there are classes that I've done extremely well in that I've spent more time helping other students catch up and there have been classes where I'm the one getting help catching up... I know, it's because eventually we'll all be working with each other instead of against each other.

I feel sorry for the girl if she's on the verge of tears because of a late assignment. I've had late assignments, and most of my teachers (despite a strict college policy) are more than willing to accept it late by a little. The worst I've ever been is mildly panicked with a new teacher. And I'm the type that if I get below 80%, I've screwed up big time.

Thanks for the link wagegoth. The most worrying for me is that I've been hearing about some firms firing lawyers because of the economy, so let's hope it's fixed by the time I'm out of school.

Soulstealer, EVERYONE is firing people because of the economy, why should lawyers be any different?

In fact, I would be surprised if lawyers weren't MORE likely to get laid off in tough economic times, as I tend to classify them with salesmen and musicians in the "people who don't produce anything" class of workers.

After all, even if demand is lower, it is possible to keep making cars and raising your inventory in anticipation of future demand, but not possible to work a law case "ahead of time".
