  • Branding FAIL

The company that I work for claims to be all about fun, friendship, and changing society's attitude towards aging, particularly for women. Sounds great, right? Despite my issues with my company, I actually do like what they're trying to do.

So...someone tell me, with this whole thing about changing stereotypes about aging...why did we just start taking advertising from Grandparents.com? And running it in prominent places on our site, and in our weekly newsletter?

Well, a lot of them are grandmothers. My kids were born when I was 37 and 40, which means I'll be coming to grandmotherhood late (fine with me, I hate babysitting), but my mom was only 45 when her first grandson was born to my sister.

Oh, I know that. It's just that we already spend a LOT of time combating the image of our members as little old ladies, and linking ourselves to that site really doesn't help the matter at all.

Again, the point is that my org is ALL ABOUT fighting stereotypes of women over fifty: our members are portrayed as fun, vibrant, highly active, and passionate about their own various interests. Yes, many of them are grandparents, and of course that's great, but splashing ads about grandparents all over our site totally shoots that branding to hell.

The answer is simple... grandparents.com offered to pay.
