Well, with the "spring cleaning" thing, it could very well have been that the store manager was too picky about what she considered to be "clean and clutter-free" wrap stands.

I've also seen such contests cancelled because they were poorly thought out, and certain stores/employees/departments had an advantage. There has also been the issue of cheating. Of course, the contest wouldn't get cancelled until enough of a rukus was rasied by those being screwed. There are several reasons that could happen.
