What other stores do this?

Lately, I have had a lot of customers ask if we match our competitor prices. We, of course, don't as we are not Wally World.

But seriously, other than Wally World, do any other stores do the price match thing?

My store doesn't, but we always get asked if we do. I love when customers tell me that something we have is cheaper elsewhere and then look dumbfounded when I tell them we don't price match.

My store does price-match. The customer has to bring in the ad to get the price match.

In fact, corporate will send out a memo to the store telling us about certain ads our competitors are running, and certain items they think customers will come to our store looking for.

My old job at music store hell would do this - but *ONLY* for items in the same mall as you and only if the competitor was IN STOCK on that item. As you can imagine, that made the customer very very angry. If Suncoast had a DVD $2 cheaper than us, I wouldn't be able to price match it if they were sold out. Why? Because if they are sold out - they don't *have* anything for us to price match now do they?

And we never price matched places like Sams Club and Walmarts b/c the music and DVD was sold at below cost so we'd be selling it for less money than what we paid to get it into our store (aka - cost). People got mad at that too, b/c it'd cost them a bunch to drive to the nearest Walmart or Sam's Club. To which I usually replied, that's not my decision to make - it's yours. Buy it or don't buy it, drive or don't drive. *shrug*

This logic escaped many people and angered even more. In the end they bought it at my store, after swearing they'd never shop there again. Why? Because we would be the only ones in a 10 mile range that actually had the hot item in stock (b/c Luna was kick-ass at pre-ordering stock!)

Because if they don't have it, it doesn't matter if it's a penny on a $3000 stereo. They can't get it for that price at that moment. As a manager told a customer once; "If we cannot go and get it for that price right now, then we will not honour their price." Kinda like a moron trying to get a deal on a TV because a salesperson at a competitor is going to give him the deal. Can I get that deal? no. So why should I give it?

YEAP, K-Mart does the same thing, they will price match anything BUT only if the item at the store is in stock, this is of course IF your talking about a specific store in a specific place..i.e. if you went to Office worked in Burwood and the guy said a camera was $this price, and the customer made us ring up THAT store and price match, but the guy on the phone said "we're out of stock today!" yeap..no price match Mr/Mrs customer BYE BYE!..if you bring in a catalogue then they price match, with 10% of the difference off that price.

We occasionally match a few local chains but that doesn't come up too often.

ALL of the electronics stores around me will pricematch, but none of em can even come close to newegg and no one pricematches internet, so I just go to them to actually see and touch the demo products and then order online.

Hechinger had a similar policy. They too would only give discounts on the exact same item...which drove some people nuts. I remember one of my high school teachers wanted a fan for her attic, and was asking me about it....only to get upset when the local Busy Beaver had a similar fan (same size, same speed, etc.) Since it wasn't made by the same people, Hechinger wouldn't match the price. Needless to say, they didn't get her business

we price match but i need proof for it so this leads to people getting us to call competiors. Usually if its under 10 bucks i dont care enough to argue. Also it has to be the EXACT same item which isnt a problem with electronics stuff but when it comes to mattresses and such people sometime think if they saw a dryer on sale somewhere else that we can match it even though ours is a maytag and theirs is a Made in China knock off.

That happened to a coworker of mine. I think there was an Amazon auction ad also.
Some people would bring in altered or photoshopped ads claiming that they printed it right off the store's website.

Isn't it 10% of the difference? So if you are selling something for $100.00 and your competitor is selling it for $90.00 you would sell it to them for $89.00 under the price match gaurantee. ($100 - $90 = $10/10 = $1)

We match the price and beat it by 10% in CT money, but it has to be the exact same item (no Mr. Pool guy, that is a different brand), and we have a lot of store brands (especially tools), so it doesn't come up much.

I heard a story about one of our former managers... apparently before I got there someone was trying to price match an item that we had for $99.99 for $99.97 and was starting to be a jerk about it. He just reached into his pocket, put a couple pennies on the counter, said "Here's your two cents!" and walked away.

When DVD player first came out (around Christmas I don't remember the year) I was on a mission to buy a Sony 5 disc player. Best Buy was out, as was Circuit City, so I went to a smaller chain and they had it, but for $100 more. I was willing to pay the difference but I asked if they price-matched. Yes, well BB and CC has it for $100 less. Since it was at closing they couldn't call (I swear I didn't plan this) to confirm so they matched. As I was leaving the mgr asked how many BB and CC hand, I said none that's why I'm here. He wasn't happy but he also didn't ask.
