  • Shouldn't people know how to do their jobs?

In my area a new store opened up;. The techs in the store had been complaining on and off that "nothing is working". None of their hardware, none of their software (I won't go into details).

After spending days troubleshooting, reloading OS and SW packages, and so on I decided to remote into the PC (when the store was closed) and check things out.

    Here's what I found out:

    1) Software package one - This package requires you to configure the USB ports that you'll use. It's a very simple process - plug a calibration item into the first port, wait for the SW to see it, go onto the next. This is a SIMPLE process and something store techs should know how to do. No one configured the ports.

    2) Hardware - simple - no one installed the SW for this hardware (and each person needs to install it under their own profiles). The sad part? I've sent them the file and instructions three times.

    3) Hardware - the configuration is correct (It's all default). My guess? The instructions tell them to connect this to the serial port 1. I bet they have it connected to 2 (there's only two cables for this piece of HW, too, one from the unit to the PC and the other from the unit to a testing box).

Luckily, the tech sup is heading up there tomorrow with an experienced tech to hold their hands and show them how to do their jobs.

My, you ARE optimistic, aren't you? People knowing how to do their jobs? Ha. Bet you $5 that they think setting up their equipment is NOT part of their job, so they shouldn't need to know how.

Old school employees are just about gone in my company. I can count the ones left in south Florida on one hand. (By old school I mean people who are proactive, try to take care of things themselves, and know how to do their jobs. Customer service was #1, not dicking around slacking off and trying to get by with doing as little as possible).
