  • I'm done job hunting

A few days ago I started seriously lookign for work again to pick up some spare folding for christmas and maybe some beyond. Its always good to be ahead of the ball in this department.

Well I am done. I am going to take a year off or so and just stay tight on the belt as the job market and corporate america is downright hostile out there.

I'll tell you why. I went out this morning to an office complex/building not far from here to do some job hunting. I got thrown out (Not quite tater salad style but close) of the building and threatened with having the cops called on me. why?

According to them I was soliciting, criminal tresspass and harrassment. All for knocking on offices and asking if I could leave a resume with someone. Cold calling on companies, they get to do it to us why not to them? And besides which back when I first graduated from college (in 1995) I did that and got some real good results. Apparently things have changed quite a bit since then.

And what is really irritating is that the person that yelled at me acted like I was some kind of total scumbum piece of trash for doing this. I mean here I am dressed in a nice suit, professional padfolio of resumes under my arm and clean and smelling good and trying my best to be polite and professional and theres this "lady" comign up and telling me to get out or she was goign to the cops as I was harrassing the tenants of the building and this and that.

So i give up. Retail don't want me and the corporate world scares me if thats the way you have to think to be there.

I did that for two entire days after college. Granted, that was in 1998, so things have changed a bit Not only did I walk all over downtown Pittsburgh handing out resumes, but also at a few banks and small companies in the two counties south of town. Not once did someone threaten me like that. Hang in there, OK?

And my family wonders why I can't get a job? Of course mom and stepdad both say they could get a new job in a day. But then again, Mom's an RN and stepdad's a trucker. Of course THEY could. Best I ever did was last four months as a telemarketer.

Tria: Yeah I noticed that about some older folks. My step dad workde the same factory from the time he was 16 to the time he retired at age 60 about 8 years ago. He still thinks that to get a factory job all you have to do is walk throuhg the front doors , be breathing and able to tie your own shoes as well as count to 20 with your shoes on and blam you're employed. Funnny thing is there are not many factory jobs.

Last week I went to a factory and asked the receptionist if I could leave a resume and she told me I might not want to as the plant was about to lay off 800 people. The local ford plant has hit the chopping block. And in general manufacturing jobs are either dead man's boots or just not there.

AFphoenix: Well its not just the one lady getting me down. Its kind of a combination of things that are going on right now. I'm about ready to build a wall around the farm and not put any gates in.

But as for the job situation I'm gonna keep looking for something that is interesting but I'm not gonna panic right now I'm a farmer primarily and my wife is a CNA and I rent out a couple of properties to people so my bills are paid and the essentials are met I just work off the farm so we can have the neato cool stuff that modern life bringsand/or to build up an emergency fund ,etc.... Its not a bad life but it isnt a plush one. I'm defiantely in the lower middle upper lower economic classes in america.
