  • Two Things I Want at Work

    1) audio recording on our security cameras. For some reason the legal requirements to have those in the U.S. make it unworkable. If people knew that their behavior would could be posted for the world to see and hear, there would be a lot less suckiness.

    2) A trapdoor on the customer side of the register over an aligator pit. It doesn't have to be aligaors. Piranas will do...or maybe sharks with lasers on their heads.

There are some places that have audio recording along with video. I think (and I could be wrong here) that it works out that the audio has to be seperate from the video.

The reason for audio recording to not be attach is this. Video recording is not "wire tapping" however audio recording is. Thus you must have legal permission (vary from state to state), to have permission to record someones conversation.

However that being said, I'm surprised some deaf person hasn't sued as the video does record his conversation.

In most places in the US as long as one person in the conversation is aware of the recording, then it is perfectly legal. You can post signs notifying people of the audio recording and only record the audio at the checkout. Since the cashier is aware of the recording as are the customers, then it should be perfectly legal as one person in the conversation is always aware that there is audio recording.

I do believe most states require at least two person in the conversation to be aware of the recording. Some states require all persons be aware. There are a handful that only require one person.

All I want at work is for customers and management to realize that I'm only one person, and I can't possibly do EVERYTHING.

                      Is that asking too much?

Nope, from what I can find it is legal in 38 states/the District of Columbia to tape the conversation as long as one person in the conversation knows about it. (Known as "one-party consent" laws.)

Here, it's a movie rentals place that's got both audio and video recording. The way they get around it is rather simple.

It's not wire tapping if you know for a fact you're being recorded. So, not only do they have these huge signs in Spanish, and English saying that they also record sound; but every customer who starts to throw a fit is reminded by the employees that not only are they on video, but, as the big red sign says; everything they are saying is being recorded too.
