  • My Department (ranty)

    Disclaimer-- This is a general rant about my department, it includes minor rants about Managers, co workers and other crap and wasn't sure where to stick it, feel free to move it if it would fit somewhere better...

    As you may know I work in the Dairy Department of one of the "Big Three" in the greater ST. Louis MO area. and it is crazy. I know all departments in most stores are crazy in their own way. Let me share with you ours.

    There are 7 people currently working in the Deaprtment. I will run down as they appear on the schedule.

    the full timers...

    1) The DH. He is actually pretty cool. He is mid 20's, Works well, and tries to stand up for us to "the Evil" when he can. -- The "issues" are that he is the son of a well known Co manager in the chain, and he gets bounced arround a lot from store to store. He has been here since Oct (?) and he has commented the longest he has been at a store is about a year...

    2) R --- R is a good man. Does his job with professionallism and never has his sections (frozen Veg, breakfasts, Fries, etc) looking bad. He also breaks down the frozen load every day and does it quick and correctly. ----- The "issues" he has had his job since '82 and as such makes the same rate of pay as the DH. making the department VERY pay heavy for the hours we get ( a MAJOR point with "the Evil" ), He also doesnt work weekends. He often says if they want him to work saturday then he will make them work him sunday for which he would get OT. That would be Bad.

    3) Me -- I work my best, do what I am told. My issues are that until recently i have had BAD Customer relations. I also (According to "the Evil" ) dont work hard enough as a Full time employee, and that I dont have the "right priorities" for the department, "The Evil" claims I will leave a section empty or unworked and work a different section. ie work cheese leave cottos/Sourcreams etc. I often say I work in a system, and because a section hasn't been worked YET doesn't mean it Wont!

    then there are the part timers...

    4) J - J is decent at what he does. The Issues are that what he does is more often the "wrong thing" or done in the "wrong way" He is the one who will let the shelves run down while he straightens out the storage area, or when he fills the yogurt he will throw up Whatever is on top instead of trying to put it in the right area. He is also famous for leaving his carts of empty boxes and empty milk crates laying around for the next shift. He also has the most personal baggage in the department. He has 2 kids with his "baby mama"- his term and I am not sure he is over 21 yet. He also has been whining that he wants a Fulll Time position, but every shift it seems like he is either coming in late or asking to leave early....

    5) G- G is also good at what he does. --- His issue is he is that he is anly focused on money. He asked to be trained ah a DH 'cause he knows they make a lot of money. He also left the store for a better job and then came back about 6 months later when he didnt want to do that job anymore (which is why he is under J in senority) He also spends a lot of time socializing with the vendors asking about how much they make and wheather or not they are hiring. I dont think he is very loyal to the store... just to his wallet.

    6) T - is is quite possibly one of the best workers in the store, she may be late from time to time, but works harder then -I think- any of us (with the exception of the DH) She deserves more hours but wont get them because of her lack of senority.

    7) then there is P. he is special needs. as such he can only handle basic tasks. he does the tasks we give him well, but needs almost constant supervision.

    with the hours for the dept and the store being cut and cut (partly because of the fuel center) we are stretched thinner and thinner. The DH wants "The Evil" to hire 2 more part timers at about 10-12 hours/week to help Lower the average pay per hour worked. But "The Evil" just hears more hours and refuses to budge. While "the Evil" is starting to understand that you can't keep cutting hours and expecting "perfect conditions" All the time, he STILL will pick out the one section that hasn't had a chance to be worked and whine. If "the Evil" had ANY People skills it wouldn't be so bad...

    <sigh>
    Lister: This is Crazy. Why are we talking about going to bed with Wilma Flintstone?
    Cat: You're right. We're Nuts! This is an insane conversation....
    Lister: She'll never leave Fred and we know it.
Working...
