What was the last job you quit and why?

  • #2
Part time job as a parts monkey for a truck dealership.

    1. I didn't like the job, and I wasn't really cut out for it.
    2. I had moved and it was no longer on my way home
    3. I had been there 10 months already and I didn't want to make it a year
    4. It was getting close to Christmas, and my full time job is shut down from Christmas - New Years and I didn't want to have to go in there in the evenings.

I left a firm that treated its employees very poorly. I was burned out on daily overtime, they refused to hire help, a large number of employees had already gone, management had made it clear how replaceable they felt we were, etc., etc., etc. I miss my coworkers there a lot, but the firm is penny wise and pound foolish. They'd rather spend tens of thousands of dollars to hire new employees and train them than to spend a little money and treat their current employees decently.

I quit Staples last month. We moved an hour north of where the store I worked at is, the stores around here had no positions available, and I wasn't driving an hour to work for 21 hours a week for 8 bucks an hour.

My first job was stuffing ads into a local Sunday newspaper. This was before that was done by machine up at the printing plant.

I quit because it was minimum wage and only 5-8 hours a week.

I called for surveys part time. Although it wasn't telemarketing (I never sold anything), I still had people shouting, yelling and very upset that I disrupted their day. Coupled with the fact that I never had a weekend off in addition to my M-F main job, I burned out real fast.

I also used to work for Media Play (this was before I went back a second time and was laid off when they went bankrupt). I had to quit for my sanity. I liked extra money, but the stress was getting to me and I physcially felt ill working each weekend. Now I know I actually need some down time or I will break. Funny the things retail can teach you.

I quit my last job because the main responsibilities involved kissing the asses of ungrateful tourists who would then demand discounts for everything, for reasons they'd just pulled out of the air. Add to this a bipolar boss who was impossible to please, the greediest bitch on the planet, and who would make five or six edicts a day on how things were to be done "from now on," only to change them the next day or forget about them completely.

Last one I quit was at the local Subway. I couldn't take the co-workers' nasty habits any longer. They were going to give someone food poisoning. They wouldn't wipe the knives off after cutting through a made sandwich, so some customer was treated to some tuna salad on his meatball sub. Totally gross. the other people never cleaned the floor, tables, drink machine, or front of house counters. The manager wanted me to cut up a rotten tomato and serve it to customers. That was when I quit and called the health department.

The last job I quit was at an outsource call center that handled IT Help Desk for Law Firms. The job itself wasn't too awful even if I did have the highest volume of tickets worked most days. Between my lazy supervisor and my idiot coworkers I could hardly stand the stress of having to get all the email tickets done, handle pissed off customers, train and retrain every single person on my team the basics of computer diagnosis and how to fix the constant stream of simple issues.

I started getting migraines and constant nosebleeds as well as going from a pack a day to two packs a day. I quit the day after one EW coworker asked me what a jpeg was and what program would you use to change it.

My fiance got a raise and I quit.

Sorry for the long ranty response.

I worked at this auto parts/service store once a while back, and I made it clear to them when I was hired that I know nothing about cars. They said that was totally cool, they were willing to train and lots of people who knew nothing about cars when they started there were certified mechanics now. So I was excited...

...until I actually started work, and every question I had was met with hostility.

"Hey Joe? This guy needs a Zimblegoffer for his 1997 jeep cherokee, but its not listed in the computer."

Joe: <rolls eyes> "Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesus christ man, don't you know anything? God, a zimblegoffer is the simplest thing. Hey Pat! He doesn't even know what a zimblegoffer is! HAHA! Can you imagine that? Steve, did you catch that? Yeah, Jon doesn't even know how to find a zimblegoffer! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!'

Technically, the last job I quit was running the kitchen at a homeless shelter, but I consider that more of a "parting ways" than quitting. There was no enmity. The shelter was relocating across town, which was too far for me, and also it was only part-time. I was offered a full-time position just a couple of months before the shelter was set to move, so I put in my notice and worked til the end.

But the last job I just up and quit was at my local amusement park. Now, I really enjoyed what I was doing and I LOVE working at amusement parks. I would have had no trouble making it through the season, and in fact was just days away from doing so - but as we got closer and closer to the end of the season, employees were dropping like flies and we were seriously understaffed. Now, I worked mostly with high school kids who legally could work no more than 8 hours a day. That meant I was pretty much the only person at my stand who could work unlimited hours. So I was given back-to-back open-to-close shifts, which were 12-14 hours. On top of it, I was asked if I could skip my breaks because we were just so slammed. So I did, but my last day, by the end of it...I was just so bone tired, so worn out. I came very close to passing out from exhaustion. I looked around the stand, which was totally trashed, and thinking of having to be back in the morning to clean it all up and then start over again with another 13 hours...I just couldn't do it. I hated to do that, but I'm sorry...no matter how understaffed you are, you can't work the employees you DO have to the point of utter and complete exhaustion.

I quit the Go Kart place in January. I was offered a full time job with better pay, and the Go Kart place was only part time, plus I had just gotten my hours cut (as had everyone else). Left on pretty good terms, as they knew I was looking for another job. Besides, someone else was able to get more hours due to my leaving.
