Uh, Katie I have to ask. Do you like your job? You don't seem to.
I dislike my job and passengers. I am job-hunting but due to the recession jobs are hard to come by. I will not leave without a job to go to. On the plus side it pays well and I get plenty of time off. I just hate passenegers rather a lot but manage to hide it at work.

I hate being told to smile. IF I choose to smile then I will. Normally I will smile just to be nice but not if someone tells me too. One time I was off the clock, in a bad mood and trying to go home when a customer told me (not asked...but told) to smile. I said "why?" Their reply was "Because I told you to and I am a customer." My response was "Oh." (no smile) and walked out the door.

We have a policy tha states that while we have to be cheerful our smile doen't have to be all "toothy ear to ear grin" Bullshit says I. I have seen many a co-worker spoken to for not "having a toothy grin".
NEVER underestimate the stupidity of the customer

I hate being told to smile by customers. I'm not someone who likes to smile normally and to be honest, I don't have much to smile about now. If I had a decent job that paid well for my education and experience that also offered me decent benefits, then I would have plenty to smile about. I'm getting underpaid and I'm not going to plaster on a fake smile for $8/hour just to make someone feel better and to boost their ego. If they want that go to a therapist or get a pet - they shouldn't expect to have their ass kissed for buying 1/2 items. I know that sounds negative, but working in retail doesn't scream job security or a good work environment right now.

As long as you do your job in an efficient manner and are polite to the customer there is no need to smile.
