Thank you. I've cleared out sent items that related to this situation.

So, I don't think it's hit the store level because I didn't hear a peep about it at work today. Everyone still treated me the same as before.

I also was told that the situation is now being handled by my school's legal department and not the IT department, so I know they are serious about it. Whoops. I didn't want it to get this serious...my name has not been used in any discussions and "should not be." Shouldn't be? Why would my name even be brought up, I wonder?

I think that's just their way of reassuring you that you won't be involved in all of this. Cause eventually someone's going to ask how they found out.

Seeing that their is an internal investigation going on (as there should be) it does show that they're concerned about the practice, if to avoid a lawsuit if nothing else. This works to your advantage for two reasons:

1.) They have the evidence of the activity being done, so if your school didn't name you at this point, they're not likely to in the future. As far as the company knows, someone in the schools IT department spotted the intrusion and issued the cease and desist based on it.

2.) Internal investigations are rarely witch hunts. They're looking into who's responsible for it, not who knows about it. The manager and any accomplices are the ones who will be hit by it as opposed to you.

In the rare occurrence your manager tries to fire you because of it, (which I doubt, even if your name is mentioned, by the time he confirms it, he would have his authority to fire you revoked) It is a retaliatory action, so all you have to do is refuse to sign it and contact your HR department. Then he gets into real trouble at that point.

In summary, the chance of you being fired because of it is slim, and should it be attempted, you do have recourse which can reverse the action.
