"Kim" received many e-mail complaints this week from staff members because either 1) the full sign was on & the garage was reserved, but there were open spots available (the garage was reserved Monday through Thursday this week) or 2) their guest, who was not on the event list, was denied access by her after I called her because the guest would not leave. I do not know if "Joe" from Facilities, her new manager, decided this because staff members complained to him, but she called me yesterday morning & told me I could make some exceptions since the event the garage was reserved for did not begin until 4 p.m. According to her, I had to 1) get where the guest was going, 2) ask how long they will be parked in the garage, 3) get their license plate #, & 4) let them know that campus police will ticket anyone parked in the garage after 2 p.m. since they are parking in a reserved spot. But I do not know if campus police will actually do this. She has done this in the past, but people took advantage of our generosity, & their car was still parked in the garage after my shift ended, & she stopped giving exceptions when the garage was reserved for an event for the 2nd shift.
So a staff member arrives to park. She is the head nurse at Student Health Services, & she has a parking tag to park in the Staff garage, but many times that garage is full when she arrives. She asks me if she can park since she sees that the full sign is on. I told her the regulations I had to follow. She said she would exit Visitor parking around 1 p.m. & park in the staff lot since there might be a spot available at that time. At 2 p.m. I went for a short break, & I walked into the garage to see how many cars were still parked. There were a couple. I saw the university police chief inside the garage, & I told him what "Kim" told me. He said he would not ticket anyone.
"Kim" was in & out of the garage that day. She has a spot reserved for her Monday through Friday, & she pays her own way. The head nurse who parked had not left by 2:30 p.m. "Kim" returned to the campus around 3 p.m., & parked in the garage. A couple of minutes later the head nurse exits Visitor Parking & parks in the staff garage.
Because of this, I am not sure if "Kim" will make any exceptions again when the garage is reserved for an event for the 2nd shift.
