Well, this economy has finally bitten me in the ass. I have now joined the ranks of the unemployed.
And the number 1 question in my mind right now is... how can the same crap happen to the same guy 2 times IN A ROW?!?
Details: My previous job before this most recent one was with Rockaway Bedding. I joined them in August of 2006 and was given a showroom of my own as Showroom Manager within just a couple weeks after finishing my training, and good times ensued. I had a good job, a good boss, and a bunch of great co-workers. Then came the Dark Times. Due to the gambling addiction he had, the company's founder and sole owner ended up filing for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in the spring of '07. A month or so later, the stores in MD and VA were turned over to Hillco Merchant Resources, and a month-long liquidation sale began. We closed our doors in early June. A couple months later, the rest of the company had been liquidated, and the store locations were purchased by Sleepy's... the largest mattress retailer in the country, and a company so shady, that even their OWN EMPLOYEES refer to them as "Sleazy's".
About 2 months after my store had closed down, I accepted a position with 1-800-Mattress, a company based out of the North-East that is well-known for its integrity and for treating customers fairly. Several other former Rockaway employees also ended up accepting positions with 1-800-Mattress throughout the North-East. I don't believe in revealing the name of my current employer, because you never know who'll run across your postings on internet message boards, so this is the first time I've named my most recent employer on these forums.
As with any retailer right now, the current economic turmoil has meant hard times for 1-800-Mattress. I won't go into all the details right now, because it's rather a long story. If you want more info, simply google "1 800 mattress bankruptcy" or even just the company's name, and you'll find all kinds of news items about what's happened over the last couple months.
Long story short: After over 30 years in business, 1-800-Mattress is in a Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Reorganization because the company's founder and sole owner has LOST HIS EVER-LOVING MIND and made some VERY bad decisions recently. Again, google the company's name for more info, I'm too disgusted at the moment to go into the whole sordid affair. At any rate, as of today, all of the company's showrooms in the D.C. area have been closed down, the area warehouse will be closed down tomorrow, and all of us that worked for 1-800-Mattress in the D.C. area are now UNEMPLOYED.
The bankruptcy court judge will not even render his verdict on what's to become of the company as a whole until mid-May, but he DID approve the closing of stores, hence the loss of my job, and the jobs of everyone else that worked for the company here in the D.C. market.
So, I've now been through the SAME CRAP at 2 jobs in a row!
Anyone know of any furniture or mattress store chains (excluding Sleazy's, I REFUSE to work for those bastards!) that are actually STABLE in this economy, that is to say, companies that are NOT in danger of going out of business in the next year or so? Because I'm really getting sick of this crap. The economic downturn started hitting furniture and mattress stores at least 3-4 YEARS ago and it's really getting old.
