  • Store Muzak?

I have noticed tat many large chain stores play "Big Yellow Taxi" by Counting Crows.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsPh_8Dxl3E

They paved paradise and put up a parkin' lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique, and a swingin' hot spot

Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you got till it's gone
They paved paradise and put up a parkin' lot

They took all the trees, and put em in a tree museum
And they charged the people a dollar and a half to see them
No, no, no, don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got till it's gone
They paved paradise, and put up a parkin' lot

Hey farmer, farmer, put away your DDT
I don't care about spots on my apples,
Leave me the birds and the bees - please

Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you got till it's gone
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot
Hey now, they've paved paradise to put up a parking lot
    Why not?

    ....
Now to me It seems Ironic that companies that well, find large tracts of land, cut down all the trees flatten it and put up a strip mall would really want to play a song that is opposed to what they are doing.

I guess the 40-45 second instrumental opening of "My City was Gone" by the Pretenders was too long.

Oh yeah, that song's on our muzak playlist.

The Counting Crows version with Vanessa Carlton could also be heard on our muzak for a time there.

I do believe that is also the theme song for Rush Limbaugh.

Knowing that Chrissy Hynde is your typical entertainment-industry liberal, I guess she must not care about her song being used that way as long as the royalties are good. That's probably got something to do with "Big Yellow Taxi" showing up on big-box in-store muzak systems.

Yep, the opening riff is used.

She let him use it because he opposed some animal testing and she is a animal rights person also. The royalataies supposedly go to PETA.

I think you meant to say
"Big Yellow Taxi" by Joni Mitchell covered by Counting Crows
It shows the power of a good song that can be another hit 40 years along.

Now, if they play The Kinks "Come Dancing" right after that, I think I'd be on the floor laughing as the irony meter would be borking.

Took me a little bit to figure that one out.

That's a bad, bad, earworm-y song. It is also played on my store's muzak system.

God dammit, now I'm going to be listening for those two songs to be played back to back.

The Kinks were a great band.

I'm waiting to hear John Forster's "Big Mac Tree" at the burger joint:

                ...
And when they chop down the Big Mac Tree
And then chop up the Big Mac Guernsey
They turn the jungle into all beef patty.
So the Big Mac come from the Big Mac Tree.

Then they ship Big Mac to the Golden Arch
                Before it decompose
Where it's served by the giant labor force
                Wearing those funny clothes.
Okay job for the girls and boys
                of the high school age
But end of line for the underclass
                Happy minimum wage.
                ...
                I am not an a**hole. I am a hemorrhoid. I irritate a**holes!
