Mostly, I'm just confused. Firstly, what the hell is Mad Men?

And secondly, how could anyone actually believe that ad is intended to sell cookware? People in advertising aren't stupid enough to try and sell things to a modern woman using 50's commercials.

Mad Men is a TV show about advertising men in the 50's (I haven't watched but I assume there is sexism and womanising etc) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0804503/

I think part of the ad campaign for it was a mock ad for cookware in the style of the adverts developed by the shows protagonists.

The author of the letter got fooled. she shounds like a bit of a snob too
I love how she works in a political angle. points for irrelevance lol.

Actually. HOW DARE SHE ASSUME MAO WOULD SELL RICE COOKERS!. obviously a racist....

It's set in the early 60s. I didn't watch the first season, but I watched an episode during the second season and got hooked. Centrally, it's the journey of a man, but also the people around him, and the country, as civil rights and the 60s come up against the 50s desire for conformity, which is something that advertisers still often push.

The obvious, overt sexism is interesting to compare to today's more covert, glass-ceiling sexism. Also, the racism is just accepted as normal. They had a potential client come in, a Jewish woman whose family owned a large department store. They had to dig around the office until they finally found one Jewish man working in accounting to bring to the meeting. The only regular black characters are the housekeeper and one of the admen's girlfriends, which was a very big deal on the show.

It seems to be a show about a man's world, and it is, but the female characters have really become the backbone of the show.

OK. I see the logic behind that ad.
