Warning, this may be long, but I desperately need a vent...
I work in a homeless services agency. We also have subsidized housing in the building and I also oversee that program. I generally just supervise the case managers (CMs) as they are just great and most of our tenants need help with minor issues like filling out paperwork or help finding a job.
We recently had one tenant move in who is just bat sh*t crazy (Let's call him BSC). Nice guy, really, just schizophrenic and not overly fond of his medication. Anyway, BSC moved in and away from an overly involved family so he is in "rebel mode" and decided, hey, I don't need no stinking medication!
Long story short, about 3-4 weeks after he decided that his meds are not neccesary, we find him putting his housewares out in the hallway (we provide them, they only need themselves and their clothes to move in).
"Why are you putting your dishes in the hallway" I ask?
"They are full of cancer!" he answers.
Now I have an office full of cancer ridden dishes so that no one else steals them and BSC doesn't get charged for losing them.
Two days later, BSC is doing karate in the bus lane...in front of our building and MY BOSS
. Boss comes in, "bleedingheart, why is BCS in the bus lane doing karate? We need to do something about this".
Boss is great, and correct, so I'm off to call his psych team.
They get him to come over to their place, the psychiatrist sees him briefly and decides that since he's mumbling and completely incoherent, he must be drunk! AND SHE WON'T SEND HIM TO THE HOSPITAL BECAUSE HE MUST BE DRUNK!
Jeez, Doc, can't you just get him into the hospital and let THEM SORT IT OUT!!
No, no, so back he comes to our place. *sigh*.
So, the next day, I notice that he's been stealing a sign from our elevator. It's a minor issue, but why steal the sign?! So off I go with his CM to find out why he finds the sign offensive. He answers the door so incoherent and out of it, I know that we have to call an ambulance. Long story short, while I'm calling 911, BSC is bolting out the door.
The CM and I are chasing him down the street (at a good distance, we ain't stupid) and coordinating the cops and ambulance to pick him up.
Later I get a call from the hospital, they can't reach anyone on BSC's psych team. SHOCKER!
so I give her as much info on the poor guy as I can and she "sectioned" him so that he can be kept in the hospital and put back on his meds.
Today I learned that the whole psych team has lost their contract. Oh, really!?!
