  • I'm quitting

    That's it. I've had it.

Monday night I was written up for, essentially, not doing the work of about three people. There were two of us covering softlines, and somehow, management still thinks it should all look perfect. I pointed this out, but still we're supposed to do it. Even with five (really, the fewest number to do a decent job) people the customers still come in and screw everything we've done up, really, so WTF are they THINKING? (Oh, wait, thinking isn't part of what these companies do, is it?) We're so understaffed it isn't funny, and they have hired exactly ONE person for Christmas. Two of our regulars are out on long-term leave for various excellent reasons, but they can't bring anybody in even temporarily to replace them.

I have some physical issues that make it difficult enough for me to do this job to begin with without them demanding the impossible!

Also, this comes suspiciously soon after I turned in a doctor's note with some limitations. My parents think they're setting me up to fire me. My lawyer boyfriend only half-jokingly thinks I should sue them. I don't want to do that, it'd take forever and be expensive and ugly and I don't think I really have a case because they already have it in their records that I was written up for poor job performance. Bastards.

So, tomorrow I'm giving notice. I don't have another job lined up. I'm going to take some computer classes and get an office job. Meanwhile I have my disability income to fall back on. I'm quitting anyway. It's that, or things will keep going the way they are and they'll fire me. I'd like to leave with my dignity intact, thank you very much!

      Thanks.

I'm determined...but I'm also scared. Really scared. But I'm trying to look at this as a positive thing. I can do better than this job, I know I can!

Best of luck!!!!!!!!! You'll do fine!!!!!!!! If it comes to it, though, take even a seasonal job, so you don't go bored out of your mind while waiting for sometime better.

Plus, it looks better on your work history if you don't go too long unemployed.

            Ah, Office Jobs!

Go to a staffing agency. It's your best bet, really. You can drop off your resume once and they do all the work for you. It sure beats running around and hoping to get a call back.

Go through your phone book's yellow pages under Employment Agencies. Did you know there's a one to one ratio of Employment Agencies per people on the planet? (Josh Kornbleuth, Haiku Tunnel) That was obviously a little sarcasm. Anyway, there's a ton of them usually, especially if you're in a larger market. Sign up with several, as many companies contract with one agency or another.

They'll usually send you on some crap job for your first assignmnet to test you out and make sure you're reliable. Just don't let them pigeonhole you. That sucks when they do that crap. And if they do, and you can't get out of the job without looking like a job hopper, just wait for one of the other agencies to call.

Good luck, DS. It doesn't sound like the management at your current place has any clue. But what place does?

I have never had any luck with agencies. What I really need is a few classes (like, I don't know Excel at all, and everybody wants you to know that) so that I can then go to them and say "Gimme a job!"

Wish me luck...I'm off to work, and to give notice. I don't know why I'm so nervous!
