(I'm not sure where to put this, so here it is)
This was my last day at the video store. Sure, I have some rather bitter complaints about the place and a few of the customers, but as I was thinking about my time there, I have realized that there are things I will miss about the place. So here's my list in no particular order:
1. Free movie rentals.
2. My boss. We've worked together for three years and it feels like breaking up. =(
3. Playing "What's that Movie...you know the one with the girl in it..." Seriously, I know this annoys some video clerks, but I love this game and am usually very very good at it.
And sometimes it's just the random trivia game, like the couple who approached me last week and said, "Who is that guy...you know, the greek guy, who drank some poison...what was that poison?" and I said, "um...hemlock?" and they said, "Yes! yes!...who was that guy?" and I said, "Socrates" and the guy looked at the girl he was with and said, "SEE! I told you she would know!"...Honestly, they drove down to the store to ask me that, why they didn't just call, I don't know.
4. All of my little old ladies and gents who come into the video store and ask me to pick out movies for them while they tell me how wonderful I am because I know who they are talking about when they mention Danny Kaye.
5. All of my regular customers. It's a shame I didn't realize how many truly great customers I deal with every day until I put in my two weeks notice and then started telling them that I wouldn't be there...sooo many of them!
6. Mr. JT who is quite possibly the nicest, politest and best parent & customer I could ever hope to meet.
7. The dogs. Yes, we let dogs come into the store so long as they are leashed and on good behavior. Giving them a little doggy treat and watching them all waggy and happy is probably the best retail therapy one can get.
8. When smart people do stupid things like returning DVD cases without the DVD, or bringing up the display box (with the huge red DISPLAY sticker on it), and when it gets pointed out and they get embarrased and I say something like, "don't sweat the small stuff." or "oh, don't worry about it, everyone's done that at some point," or "Don't feel bad, I work here and I've done the same thing" and then we both laugh and they feel better about it (or at least look like they do) and we let it pass and move on.
10. The SC's who over time and with a lot of smiling and small conversations have evolved into people that I'm actually happy to see enter the store.
(Because sometimes, SC's are sucky because they've just been through something sucky and just need someone to smile at them and remember their name)
