    Innacturate Job Title

    My current job title is Telecommunicator. This used to mean that I answered the switchboard phone, was backup for the dispatcher, took care of handing out door keys for the college, and was responsible for the college cars. Now it means I do all of that plus any lock fixing (which is a lot) and some door fixing kind of. Not to mention working to sort through all the stuff from the guy who used to do that stuff. Technically I still am in the college's police department, but half of my job sort of fits under the maintenance department.

    I have to say, I've been loving working on the locks for the most part. I got my pinning kit and have been redoing a bunch of locks so that the key system can be accurate. I'm so glad summer semester is in a couple of months though because I have so much work I need to get done. The previous guy left things a mess and so I'm still sorting through all of that with the help of the guy who mostly replaced him.

    This coming week I get to have fun talking to some department chairs and explaining to them that I'm changing locks around and a bunch of people are going to need new keys. Those are just the offices too. I have to wait to do the classrooms till the break between semesters. Then on to more projects.

    Isn't re-pinning a lock fun?

    I changed the lock on the front door to my house, once, and we got a kit that required that you pin the lock for the key you had, so that you didn't have to get all new keys (and since it was a rental, we needed to keep the key working).

    It's like a small physical puzzle. I'd love to have that for a job.

      Oh yeah I love it though the locks we have are way more complicated than the regular door ones. There are three pieces that come apart instead of the two and when you're putting the top pins in after the springs, you have to keep stuff lined up and such. Hasn't been too bad but I think I've gotten half my springs shot across the room!

        Just don't drop the box of pins! DH has done that. It's MUCH worse than playing 52-card pick up!
        Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

          Could you use a magnet to grab them? I've used one on tiny screws when the bag broke open. Manager didn't beleve I could clean them up as fast as I did.

            I have two pin kits. The general one that I got during my class has pins that measure from .010 of an inch to .360 and they go up by fives (.010, .015, .020) so the visual difference is so small that you would need to use a tool (I forget the name...) to get the proper measurements to figure out which ones are which. My other kit isn't quite as bad but would be a pain in the ass to sort everything out back to the correct slots.               Most pins are brass or aluminum, and therefore are not magnetic. Besides, it's not the picking them up that's the problem--it's the sorting them back into their proper spots by length. As S-L mentioned, you generally need calipers to measure the differences, unless you're lucky enough to have a color-coded set, and then you need a really good eye to tell the colors apart.
              Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.
