"I'm having trouble understanding you" ?

I'd be insulted if I went somewhere and someone called my accent weird. We have a lot of accented speech in my city, I've never told anyone they sounded weird. Its rude. I've always said some variant of the above. "I'm sorry" is a great preface. Its polite.

But I've already told her many times that I can't understand her. Her reaction is to get all pissed off about it.

Its probably extremely stressful to live in a country where you don't know the language, while trying to learn it, and still no one understands you. And then they tell you sound "weird."

I can't tell you how many times people have said my accent was weird. Mostly coz they can't place it - they think I'm Scottish/Irish/Welsh/Australian/British...Um no, I'm South African
But, but, but... you have such a distinctive accent. It sounds like nothing else at all!

It also depends which region of SA you're from - just like with all other countries, we have different accents depending on which area you're from I'm from the southern part of Western Cape, so we sound rather british. As you go more north, the Afrikaans accents get heavier and heavier.

All the ones I've heard have been quite obvious. (Granted, once it was that once he said were he was from it was obvious, and how come I couldn't get it before). However the ones I'm used to are from people who've been in Canada a while. Maybe it's that they all sound the same after a few years away? Or maybe I've only met people from one region. (At least, who I've known were from SA).

That's no excuse to call her accent weird. IMHO that was rude and insensitive.

Chances are shes had people to talk about and point at, "That lady with the weird accent."

Next time be a more sensitive.
