I'm bagging one afternoon when this little girl, around four or so, beckons me down to her level with her index finger. I bent over and she whispered, "I stole this," she says, revealing some kind of novelty candy.
"From here?" I ask. She nods. "You shouldn't have done that, you know." But it's pretty obvious she's tuning this "adult talk" out. I continue bagging. She beckons me again, this time pointing to her swollen, black eye and whispers, "I fell down the stairs." (I was kinda thinking abuse at that point.)
That sent little shivers up my spine - the way she said it sounded like something out of a horror movie.
