A little background...I manage a Car Rental company in the very far corner of the Northeastern United States...we are a very seasonal location, during the summer I have about 500 cars in my fleet, winter we have about 70. So, you can imagine how dead it is right now. I have a lot of free time at work (understatement) so I went through my accident reports from the past year. Here are some of the best explanations from customers as to how they broke our car. Not everyone who rents a car is a complete idiot....but sometimes it feels like it.
"Driving into camping area I got distracted by a tree that I thought was a Child since it was windy. Drove car into Fire Pit. I was unable to get car out of fire pit. We called your roadside #, they advised to put fire out while we waited for tow truck to come. We needed the fire to cook dinner though, and figured since the fire was not all that hot it probably would not hurt the car as cars are made of metal".
"Was driving North on I95. I turned around for about 15 seconds, and when I turned back around, the road had disappeared from under me and I was in the ditch heading for a tree."
"I was making a right hand turn onto Main Street out of hotel parking lot. The car travelling down the road did not stop, so they hit me. Obviously, if they saw me pulling out in front of them, they should have slowed down or stopped. They should be responsible for the damage."
"Police attempted to pull me over, I did not stop since I was not sure it was a real police officer. They chased me for 15 miles. I ran over spike strip which flattened 2 tires. I stopped car, got out of it, and ran. Police broke the windows of the car since they wanted to make sure noboby was in it. Turns out it was the real police. I think you should contact them for payment, since it was their spike strip that flattened the tires, and they broke the side windows."
"Driving down a boat ramp to take picture of the ocean in the morning. Got out of car, car rolled down ramp into water. I think I did not put it in park."
Believe me when I say that after 4 years of doing this job in various locations all over the country I have many many more stories/incidents...but this is already long enough...will save for future posts!
