  • Working on my birthday.....*rant*

Now, before I even begin, I will acknowledge that - technically - I have no grounds to complain about this (which is why this is in GWC and not MiM) But it still irritates me......

For the ENTIRETY of 2010, I have had Tuesdays and Wednesdays off, like clockwork. Tuesday/Wednesday is my weekend. The only Tuesdays and Wednesdays I've worked were a couple where I swapped shifts, and one where The Don asked me if I'd mind picking up an extra day to cover a time-off request.

My birthday this year (9/14) falls on a Tuesday. And it also falls into a blackout period (8/15-9/15 for Back to School) so I couldn't request it off.

My mother is currently on a trip to Germany and doesn't get back until very late on the night of the 13th. The 15th she and my father are going to an opera, and then she's back to work the next 3 nights. So this left my actual birthday as the only night we could go out for my birthday unless we postponed it at least a week. And I made plans to hang out with PortuguesePrincess earlier in the day, and she and AdamAnt316 were invited to come to my dinner.

Well, remember that part about ALWAYS having Tuesdays off?

Well OF COURSE that means that The Don scheduled me to work 3-close that day, and PortuguesePrincess 8-2, thereby COMPLETELY torpedoing ALL of my plans.

Yes, I know....technically I have no complaint; I didn't put in a request and this is within my availability. But since I'd always gotten Tuesdays off I don't think it was unreasonable to assume that I'd get that day off. And it's not as if he didn't know it was my birthday; every month the home office sends out a list of birthdays and date-of-hire anniversaries for that month so they can be posted in the break room, and my birthday is up there.

Happy Birthday, Dave1982. Your present is a closing shift. Would've been nice to go out to dinner with my family and friends, but I guess that's too much to hope for.

Thankfully, Focker said he'll try and see if he can re-arrange that shift for me. We're going to look at that tomorrow, but of course there's no guarantee of anything.

If it's any consolation, I'm working on my birthday also, because that's when the DC decided to send our only truck of the week.

Even if I would've been working 5 to 1:30, I'd have the afternoon free. But it's 11:30 to 8, unless the truck comes earlier and we decide to come in earlier.

I get to work my birthday too, 9/12, 2-11...but since it's a Sunday in Utah, everything's closed anyways. Wife and I will just do something Monday. Doesn't make it any less sucky. I can't request the time off because of lack of coverage. Working by myself in this data center sucks when I want or need time off. :-(

I had something kind of like that happen on my birthday a few years ago - normally the library didn't schedule me to come in on Wednesdays, but every so often they did, and one of those nights happened to be on my birthday.

It's a bad year for working birthdays it seems. I always take mine off, even if I have no plans, and this year I had to work it. and it was a horrible shift busy and idiots both. sigh

one year a co-worker purposely took the entire week off just to block me getting my b'day free...
got revenge when the boss found out and let me take all the OT to cover, the extra pay meant I could have a hella-good bash the next week.

Oh man, I hated that. I don't mind when I get out early that day, but when I have to work closing. That just pisses me off

I'd ask to switch shifts to the morning for that day, except that that would mean I'd be closing the previous one night and opening the next. It would also mean getting Wonder Bread to agree to a switch, and for a variety of reasons I just don't see that happening.

If it is any consolation, this was on my birthday. Yeah, it sucked big time.

Thanks.....and at this point I don't think I'm gonna get that shift off. Everyone else in my department either has class that night or is already working that day.

This year I was so close to having work off on my birthday. But a night auditor at my boss's other hotel got sick, and their normal night auditor had been working some crazy amount of days in a row. So I was asked to cover that shift.

My bday present was all the yogourt and Pibb I could drink plus the bonus hours.

Happy birthday Dave. If the numbers in your username is your birth year, I can prove what day of the week you were born. For you it was the greatest thing to have happen to you. But for us it was a Tuesday.

my birthday falls on a monday this year (11/1) which is also a truck day, so i didnt bother requesting it off.

i normally have sundays off. so i figured just to be safe i'll request the 31st off just in case.

bosslady says i cant have either off. because they will be doing an overnight to set up xmas. so...couldnt you at least find someone from another store to cover? or...idk...another employee who isnt doing the overnite? oh thats right he doesnt work weekends..

i also asked if i work thanksgiving and xmas eve can i have xmas day off. she paused and had to think about it, before reluctantly saying yes. while SHE gets BOTH off completely.

                          end rant ...lol sorry

Thanks. Yes, the numbers in my username are my birth year. And yes, I was stuck working......

And the really annoying thing? At the end of the night - in front of everyone just before setting the alarm - The Don turned to me and said "You know, if you'd put a request in I'd have given you the day off and we couldn't avoided this drama."

OK.....first of all, there was a notice - in The Don's handwriting - right where we submit time-off request chits - clearly stating that 8/15-9/15 were blackout dates and NO requests would be honored.

Second.....there was no drama. NONE. I did ask if there was any way it could be arranged for me to get the day off, and I did follow up on it, but I didn't whine about it. And when it became obvious that it wasn't going to happen I accepted it, showed up, put in a full effort, and didn't bitch. WHAT DRAMA ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!?!?!

                            Fucker.....
