  • So I may be quitting

I've had it. I can't take it anymore.

My nerves are becoming increasingly shot. No matter how many times I'm told that this is not the case, or that's the case, my body may still be working in my New Store, but my brain and mind are working in old store. In short, I have the mind of a shrew when it comes to working there. It is exhausting.

I cannot seem to handle yelling or criticism very well-I burst into tears today when my manager got angry at me over a screwup. Which pretty much kisses any chance of ever getting a future promotion good-bye. I would never be able to sit there and see people getting ahead of me, while I am sitting there in the same tedious mind-numbing work. I have been with the company for 3 years now. It will be 6.5 by the time I get out of university. My manager won't get rid of me, no matter what.

I am ready to take care of that issue for her. The only way anything will be beneficial to me in the long run is to quit and focus on being able to yell and take criticism.

There is one thing I am going to do however before I do leave. And that is, access my file. I'm aware it sounds odd, but I have never actually looked at my file before. Now I want to look at all of it and if I'm allowed to, copy whatever may be useful for me when I leave.

I have already started looking for jobs. Unfortunately I may not have much luck, as the applications I sent out imply that I would have to give 3 weeks notice prior to leaving. I'm going to reapply to all of those jobs once my 3 weeks notice ends and say that I can now work immediate start.

I don't think there is a whole of people who take being yelled at well. And angry critisism is very hurtful and destructive... there is a HUGE difference between genuine constructive critisism (which is termed "mentoring" or "leading") and the abuse a lot of people try to pass off as "managing".
There's no such thing as a stupid question... just stupid people.

It's me is right, if your supervisors are using words that are degrading and embarrassing you in tones that are unprofessional then it's not you. Ask yourself these questions "Are what they saying actually teaching me anything? Or just meant to hurt my feelings?" I've had a crappy boss that felt it necessary to belittle me in front of the other staff. Then she promoted me and couldn't understand why NO ONE took me seriously. Needless to say I was much better without that job. My best advice would be to understand that if you let them hurt you you're giving them what they want. Living well and letting it go is the best form of vengeance.

You are certainly nowhere near alone. I can't think of anyone who truly enjoys being yelled at, much less insulted or harshly criticized.

Whatever happened to professional behavior in management is beyond me.

This wasn't even yelling per se, my manager got angry at me for a screwup that I seem to normally handle but my manager couldn't.

I've decided that by the end of next week, I'll hand in my notice. I'm going to talk to my psychologist and see what he says.

I went through sort of the same thing when i got into trade work...

After 6 years of it i can now handle a manager 2 inches form my face screaming and swearing (they all do it....and call you stupid and whatever other names you can think of). So all in all, it may be worth sticking to it, talking to your manager and establishing boundaries for her chats. I cant see quitting over it being good in the long run, as chances are at your next job you might screw up, and you run a 50/50 chance of a really good manager or a worse one for yelling.

But if you get over it, one day youll be the manager and youll get to do the yelling, once i was promoted i certainly enjoyed being on the opposite sides of those chats!!

Unfortunately my body can't control the response. And everything else I have tried does not work-this is why I keep telling people I have to be absolutely perfect, otherwise I wind up a mess. That I can't stuff up.

                  And bumping for an update.

Turns out that there are about 3-4 of us who are being given the bare minimum in hours. And guess who's getting all of our hours?

All four of the new hires.

Our manager and 2IC get full-time hours by default, our 3IC gets around 30 hours a week, but has been known to do full-time. The rest of us get hours allocated according to survival need (that is, do we live on our own, share house, with parents, in a family etc.), study load (school, uni, etc.), regular appointments and so on and so forth. I'm quite content with 20 hours and so are a few people.

However, two people are not happy. I'm pissed because I'm worried they're trying to do a staff purge and my coworker is pissed because she can't survive on 10 hours a week. But they went one step further and broke a BIG union rule.

Time to whistleblow. The union will protect both of us should we complain. Unfortunately I doubt we can get anywhere with claims of favouritism. If they want to get rid of me, I'm not going down without a fight. My referees aren't currently linked to the store.

I don't care how people justify managers' yelling for mistakes done by their subordinates because in my view, that is not effective in making a worker do their job to the best of their ability.
All yelling is going to do is put someone on the defensive & once that happens then anything that is meant to be helpfull is going to be discarded like yesterday's pot roast cause the person on the recieving end is in the midst of a "flight or figt" response. In other words, they'll be too pissed off to give a shit.
You don't motivate your people by tearing them a new one. People make mistakes from time to time. AND if certain managers & boss's think that yelling at someone is "managing" then they need get a reality check.

Hey now, I love leftover pot roast.

You do have a good point though, yelling and berating people is terrible for moral and productivity. If someone fucks up big time or very regularly it may be a needed wake up call but it should be rare.
