We're leaning towards the first. He had no way of knowing they were personal and not store machines (the store machine is also a Mac), and it appears to be a crime of opportunity.

Sounds to me that he stole it just to turn around and sell it. I would check Craigslist and any local pawn shops to see if they put them up.

Actually, they can get at your files. However, if you use dropbox, you can disable a specific machine from accessing your dropbox account by using their web interface. It's pretty easy, too. Go to the account link, go to "My Computers", and remove the machine.

Won't stop them from getting at any files, but it *will* stop them from doing damage to other computers that use dropbox.
