  • Doing that thing you do

Any of you have one task at work that you really enjoy doing?

At my old Tim's I used to love checking the ice cap machines (re: lifting the lid) and then dashing to the back to make the mix if necessary. You had to go in the fridge, pour the stuff into the machine and then head back into the fridge and make a batch for next time, so people wouldn't be stuck during a busy point having to waste time making the mix.

Eventually, my supervisor cracked a joke about how I was always on top of the ice capp solution situation. Of course, my enjoyment of this job had nothing to do with the fact that I'd have to stay in the fridge, in the back, away from the customers, for five minutes a pop

I like to do that for which I was hired, fry stuff. I could fry all day long, fry and grill. For I am Sofar the Frialator. It's all the other stuff that wasn't in the job description, that's what I don't like, like running half the goddamn restaurant.
You're not doing me a favor by eating here. I'm doing you a favor by feeding you.

I love making ice cream cones (3 swirls, 3") and suffer greatly when I see others making sloppy lopsided cones and handing them out.

But the thing I will nearly shove people out of the way to do is make sundaes with extra topping. I drizzle the extra part in swirly patterns down the bottom half of the clear cup, top that with ice cream, then squirt the usual topping around the top, avoiding the peak so it doesn't melt and stays perky. It's a thing of beauty.

I shoulda got a job at Dairy Queen, but NO, I needed year-round employment

I'm notorious for my bad plays on words.....it's something I take pride in. The lamer the joke? the higher my self-esteem. Had one today actually, one of my best so far:

        Customer: I need a mouse.

Me: i'm sorry sir, we don't sell pets here.

But then, no one has ever accused me of being sarcastic either.... (you believe me right?)

Currently I'm enjoying the straightening and recategorizing of my new store. Also, the challenge of straightening out the filing system, etc. Okay, I haven't actually got to the second yet- but it's one one of the many projects upcoming.

I like helping people pick out movies.

I like cashing people out. I actually just love getting to talk to so many people every day.

And, strangely enough I get some morbid enjoyment out of dealing with customer issues and SC's.

I really, really love solving thorny knitting problems. It's the high point of my entire week, sometimes my entire month, when a customer comes in with some project that they've managed to -really- screw up and begs me to find a way to fix it. I love taking something that's broken and chaotic and sitting down and being a calming force and restoring order to the universe.

It helps that people are always insanely grateful for this. I've had people come in and actually burst into tears, saying that they don't think anyone can solve their problem, but a friend said I could, but they doubt it. I always tell them to relax, go ahead and browse the store for a bit, see look here's some pretty new yarn we just got in, while I take a look at whatever it is.

It sometimes takes a while, but there has yet to be a problem I couldn't fix, and it makes me feel like a white knight. NO ONE is an SC to me after I save the thing that they spent months on and thought they'd have to re-do. Feels really good. (Plus, I love the challenge!)

I also love teaching people to knit. I've discovered that I'm extremely good at it. I actually have to remind myself that I need to be charging people money for these lessons, because if I didn't need the money, I'd happily do it for free.

When I worked food in college, I loved making milkshakes. I used to make myself chocolate-cherry shakes, and a friend I worked with taught me how to make a faux Orange Julius (vanilla ice cream, a bit of vanilla extract, and OJ instead of milk - tastes just like the real thing - yum!)

In the bookstore I loved doing the safe and the paperwork in the morning - it's methodical and it gets you away from the people . I also loved zoning for returns. There's something so satisfying about the "return beep" on the scanner gun (any BNer knows what I mean). I especially loved doing strips...after I got over the blasphemy of ripping up books, of course. But there's something cathartic about tearing the covers off cartloads of books at a time, then frisbeeing them into the dumpster (plus you get to keep the good ones). (OK, the frisbee part is just fun )

VIP Chains is my love at the arena. The chains basically divide VIP and general and at the end of the night we make sure none of the VIPs cut through. I love doing it and the fact that something is bound to happen makes it more exciting.

More or less unofficially helping out in the meat department. It's new to me, so it's fun. If I did it more often, it would get boring, like everything else. I need change once in a while.

my forte is video games. I love having someone come up to me and say 'i dont know much about games, what should i get?' as long as they are willing to listen and answere my questioons about their preference on games/movies/books then it goes great.

of course when they start complaining about prices........then they just complain and dont listen.

I love to organize the backroom and handle shipment. It feels really good taking that space and ordering the chaos. Plus, then I always know exactly what we have/don't have and where I can find it! It just feels good. I always feel like I've accomplished something afterward. I also like the workout I get from climbing up and down the ladder and lifting heavy boxes. It's gotten that I can lift a lot more now then I could a few months ago.

Anyway, I start my new job on Tuesday... not sure I'll be available for shipping day at my mall job. oh well.
I will not shove “it” up my backside. I do not know what “it” is, but in my many years on this earth I have figured out that that particular port hole is best reserved for emergency exit only. -GK

While it's not current, I had a job for a while at a physical therapy office. That was my favorite job. Ever.

I really liked working with patients-setting them up and getting a few minutes to talk to them a few times a week. You really felt like you got to know them. Then you'd monitor exercises, increase weights where necessary... The biggest reward was their last appointment. They were always so happy to be done and doing better.

                        It was great.

Then my mom got me fired while I was vacationing during Senior Week.

Honestly, I kinda love one-upping an SC in a work-appropriate manner. Other than that, though....

I, too, love really tough/complicated issues that I find a way to solve, usually by using any and all of my connections and research skills. It's the most satisfying feeling in the world when I can resolve something no one else could.

At the zoo, where I worked before I came here, I loved cleaning the penguin exhibit, because I got to use a big, high-powered hose to spray everything down. I also loved any and all of the enrichment activites--which basically involved target training and "playing" with the animals, especially the otters.

I like doing carryouts. I'm practically the only person who can meet corporate's 3-minute standard for delivering an item to the front of the store (not that it's enforced).

Loading the item into the customer's vehicle, however, can be a different matter.

I also like working out clearance. Easy work and I can put the merchandise wehrever, as long as it's with other clearance merchandise.
